Hi, last time I posted here was to share my strength training app, DragonStrength, when it went to open beta. It got flagged as spam almost immediately. I’ve been here lurking since 2018… would like to try again, respectfully, in hopes of gaining some traction and feedback, as it is now publicly available in the App Store. I just released version 1.1 yesterday but haven’t had time to make much of a marketing push. I’ve been working on it since last October. Since the beta was released I’ve added a bunch of new features including HR and calorie tracking. It’s still free, and I’d love if at least some of you would check it out. Thanks, everybody!
Your best bet in terms of not appearing to be a spmmer is to actually engage with the community in ways other than self-promotion. I’m going to let this post remain, and will askd the community to be courteous.
Mherrick84 I strongly encourage you to engage not just advertise. Put your Web site in your Profile.

I don’t think “asking for feedback” is any different from advertising. If anything, it’s even worse than normal advertising. An advertisement asks you to buy or download something. “Asking for feedback” asks for even more—aside from buying or downloading, you are expected to give something back.
I have asked this several times and I will again. Why can’t there be a Category for these folks to post and if people, like myself, don’t want to see them , they can block the category?

Then these self-promotion posts will fill the front page for non-members visiting this site. They won’t go as far as setting up an account, diving into the unintuitive Settings panels and blocking the category. They’ll simply assume this site has been fatally infected with ads and leave. That’s how the software-related subreddits are dying right now.
SEO will probably suffer as well. No more appearence on the first page of Google search results when we are 90% ads.
I disagree. asking for feedback and sincerely engaging in that feedback is very different to a driveby advertisement for a product with no engagement at all.

A dedicated category for developer ads would be up to MacSparky, but personally I think it’s a bad idea. One that I have seen fail, more than once.
- Such a category would encourage less desirable developers / apps to post blatant ads.
- Many of our members are developers, as well as well-regarded posters. THey add to the community.
- A developer genuinely seeking user feedback is a good thing. That’s how we get apps that work for us.
- Members can skip a thread title they don’t find interesting.
- Flag a post you find problematic, and @cornchip and I will deal with it.
Keep in mind that initial posts from developers that are just posting ads usually get blocked before you see it; such posts don’t go live.
Personally I see a developer looking for feedback as a good thing. It’s the drive-by posters thar I feel are exploitive.

What to me distinguishes someone as a power user in this community is their engagement in discussions within the community. Even if only to comment every once in a while about a posting or a sentiment that affects them. Lurkers are, almost by definition, not engaging. Hence, not worthy of my gracious, unilateral attention, certainly not as a power user. And then, jumping in, pushing a product, and asking for feedback sans any true context or depth. Respectfully, while I, as a member of this community, might have useful sentiments and wisdom to share, I hesitate to do so on hand such … disrespect.
