Using 27" iMac (2017 model) as External Display?

Inspired by the Mac Studio I’m considering the possibility of using my iMac as a display for the Mac Studio.

Either that or using the iMac as an external display for a 14" M1 Macbook Pro.

Is either of these a realistic approach?

Note: I’ve considered the Studio Display but it is my understanding that it is the same screen as on the Retina iMacs. True?

Unfortunately, Apple removed Target Display Mode starting with the 2015 iMac 5K. You could use something like Luna Display to turn an iMac into a remote monitor, but in my experience something like that’s kind of laggy compared to an actual monitor.

Yes, Chris is right. There’s no way to do this anymore, unfortunately.

Thanks guys.
I got misled by Apple Sales Support by being told this was possible.
Finally got a sales person who could explain exactly what you folks are describing. Target Display Mode is not supported on iMacs after 2014.

Bummer, now I’m trying to rationalize the purchase of a Studio Display. :moneybag: :moneybag: :moneybag:
