Well? Have you updated to iOS18 or Sequoia? What’s it like? So far, so good?

Alright, wasn’t aware that it was an AI issue of sorts.

I like that it didn’t break anything and there are few changes that I had to take action on (I use BetterSnapTool which conflicts with the built-in window snapping, and BST is better).

So:

  • Two iPhones upgraded with no problems.
  • Two Apple Watches upgraded with no problems
  • One iPad upgraded with no problems. Our 1st gen iPad Pro is not upgradable, and, of course, neither is our original generation iPad paperweight.
  • There are four Macs eligible to be upgraded:
** 2019 MacBookPro which has been running the developer beta since WWDC. Now running the release without problems
** 2020 27" iMac which I will upgrade probably today.
** M1 iMac which I will also upgrade today.
** M1 Mac mini, my server computer which I am not upgrading for a year.

Which actions did you take?

I use BetterTouchTool (which includes BetterSnapTool) for window resizing and noticed that maximizing a window (using a keyboard shortcut) no longer results in the window occupying all screen space below the menu bar. Instead, there is a not-so-small border around all four edges of the window…

I guess I need to change these settings? How did you configure these?

Settings

(The last one seems to fix the border)

I upgraded my iPhone and two iPads and noticed no significant difference between iOS 18 and iOS 17. When I did my iPhone, I had to double-check to be sure it had upgraded

I’m holding off on updating my Mac. I can see no compelling features there and it seems high-risk/low-reward.

@aardy How are you using iPhone mirroring? To me, it seems like a brilliant feature and I can’t think of a single use for it.

@MitchWagner for work I gives me access to an authenticator application that I have to use a lot during the day to enter a provided number and means I can just leave it on the desk. That has saved me so much time / ‘hassle’

Also with some apps being iOS only that I need to check again it means my phone can just sit on my desk whilst I give them a quick check.

I guess having two studio displays helps as I have plenty of screen estate.

Back on the beta I realized that the green window button brought up macOS’s menu and not BST anymore. So in BST, Extras, I assigned right click on the yellow button to show the BST menu. Then after the release version BST popped up a window saying that I should turn off “Tile by dragging windows to screen edges” off.

That is interesting. I have the M4 iPad Pro and installed iPad 18 with no issues, fortunately. And, I did install the new iOS 17.7 update before installing.

Not all M4 ‌iPad Pro‌ owners have had an issue installing the update, and it could be linked to installing the new iOS 17.7 update before installing 18.

There are quite a few varying reports about bricked M4 iPads on reddit, with some skipping 17.7, and some installing it before.

Fortunately, I avoided that problem! :slightly_smiling_face:

Fortunately mine upgraded ok too, I did install 17.7 first by mistake.

Great use case!

I have two such apps that I have to use regularly, but they both require Face ID.

How does that work when mirroring to a Mac computer?

(I live in the EU, so I can’t test this myself)

The one I need uses FaceID too, however it accepts touch id from the mac and I’m pretty sure watch confirmation too, can verify that tomorrow.
Great integration.

Updated to iOS 18 and WatchOS 11 this morning. Not yet noticed any significant changes to iOS and only minor ones to WatchOS.

Confirming that authentication via touchid / watch or mac password all works as a passthrough to the phone.

Also if you’re mirroring your phone and click a notification that pops up on your mac from the phone it takes you to the app on the phone.

Thanks!

Then this is the one feature we currently don’t have in the EU that I hope Apple will reconsider soon.

I’ve updated iPad and iPhone, but I think I’m going to wait on my Mac. My Watch doesn’t have an update so I guess is now “out of date”. I’ve also sorted out various family members on iPad and iPhone.

My initial grumpy thoughts are:

  • Most the older people I know never used the photo roll function when it came in a previous iOS, and continued to use the default album view. (I did too, I liked it!) This has now gone, which is causing me a headache because all the people I help are unhappy. I’m unhappy too, I really don’t like the photo roll view and don’t see why this change was forced on us. I have disabled all the extra nonsense in Photos on iPad and done the same for everyone else, which seems to be the best I can do. It’s worse on iPhone where you seem no longer able to access Favourites at all (has anyone figured this out?).

  • The changes to control centre are probably good but I am a grump and it’s going to take a while to get used to it. I spent a few minutes setting up the new Home page in control centre how I’d like it. I like that control centre seems quite customisable.

  • HOW HAS APPLE STILL NOT PROVIDED FOLDERS IN FREEFORM.

  • The colours on some of my Shortcuts buttons have changed :joy: It’s not a problem, but I had a moment of panic where I thought my Shortcuts had been lost/moved.

  • I’m quite excited to try the maths function in Notes. I will probably have to do some maths at some point today so I will try it then if I remember. I had just bought a numpad specifically to make maths on my Mac more exciting though :joy: (I’ve been trying to use my Mac calculator more and drift away from my Casio. Not for any particular reason, just thought I should!)

  • I’m a bit disappointed that nothing much seems to have changed in Mail. I’m still waiting for the ability to sort by sender, etc.

It’s worse on iPhone where you seem no longer able to access Favourites at all (has anyone figured this out?).

No, it’s this way. On the iPad they are still in the sidebar but there’s no sidebar (for a good reason, I think) on the iphone. So it’s either all or nothing, but with granular control

Changes in Apple Mail comes with the later updates to iOS 18

  1. In Sequoia the local file links generated by Things Helper app (Things Helper ) no longer work. Previously clicking on these links would open the corresponding folder, now nothing happens. And yes I did update Things to latest version which is compatible with Sequoia

After updating to Things 3.21.1 this issue is resolved

I think for me a new update just means fumbling with some of the new stuff, then forgetting about it and keep using the device as before.
