Where do you find out about Mac apps you didn't know about previously?

I use Diarly - although I am on subscription, not through set app. Personally I prefer it. A lot less chrome and fuss.

I think my discovery breakdown is something like

  • 25% developer meetups (especially when initially moving my work to Mac)
  • 50% forums and podcasts (usually referred back to after realizing a need)
  • 25% actively searching for an unknown solution to an identified need

I’ve made my share of missteps and had to adjust, but overall, no complaints!

SetApp has helped me save so much in terms of useless subscriptions it’s crazy. Just about every piece Of software that I’ve wanted that would cost an arm and a leg for a full license or monthly sub (I’m looking at you, OmniPlan) I’ve been able to find a workable alternative on SetApp.

Ooh, I like that word, collecting. It makes it sounds like such a nice and productive hobby, which in many ways it is.

LOL!! I have lots of collections. It is nice to have an array so as not to be stuck with limited options. I learn how to Mac by using them.

(Yeah, I like that verb.)

I know this is OT a bit

agreed. For me, I already paid for most of the apps that are good for me already. If I knew about this 10 years back this could save me a fortune. I also try to convince myself I do not loose all out as Setapp limits to one Mac only, right?

MacStories.net is another place where you get introduced to new apps. Run by Federico Viticci and Jon Vorheese.

If you’re using Textsniper you should try CleanshotX. It’s a more powerful replacement also on Setapp.

My sentiments exactly! It’s what the Apple Mac Appstore should have been.

My question is what happens to your data if you decide to leave SetApp? For many of the apps you would just use their usefulness but with others you have created and saved data. For example, if you have a year’s worth of entries in Diarly or 120 tasks in 2Do or half a dozen maps in MindNode, what happens to that stuff? It seems you’ve lost access to all of it unless you buy the apps individually or there is way to export the data in usable form.

There would probably certain apps I would buy. I love Houdah Spot and Clean My Mac.

At least w Setapp you get to try out lots of apps, if that is your “thing”.

I was really tempting to sign up for Setapp but it is not clear to me on

  1. are the apps limited to 1 Mac use
  2. are ongoing subscription included, such as Ulysses
  1. are the apps limited to 1 Mac use
You can add on many mac’s at additional costs. Depends on what plan you subscribe to.

  2. are ongoing subscription included, such as Ulysses
    Yes

One Mac as far as I know. Maybe not. There is an additional charge of $2.50 or so for iOS .

Yes. Ulysses is one of their apps!

That is such a good question. Having learned the hard way I always check what export options any app has before I get too involved with them

In the case Diarly you can export as markdown, PDF and RTF. With Mindnode you can export to OPML as well as several different mindmap apps. There maybe an issue with apps like Diagrams where you can only export as a PDF.

I’m a developer and currently maintaining three macOS apps. I try out new apps constantly to get some fresh ideas.

The marketing I did for my apps were posting on r/MacApps and ProductHunt. So that’s two places to go.

Also Twitter. If you follow a lot of developers on Twitter like I did, you can discover new apps at the very beginning.

Though AirPort by Jordan Singer is mostly for iOS apps, you can still find some macOS apps.

Indie Apps Catalog has a dedicated Mac section.

And a plug for my new app Anybox, a bookmark manager for macOS.
