Will Apple Fix the Problems with iPadOS?

It’s almost like they should have left the Simple iPad on iOS, and gone harder with ipadOS on the Pro and maybe the Air. But again Apple don’t seem to want to

I don’t agree that I’m gaslighting anyone. The discussion has the potential to impact how Apple treats the future of the iPad. It goes both ways. Apple markets the iPad as this or that. Then users react with calls for this or that feature. Apple sometimes ignores that pressure, other times they seem to hear and respond.

My point is that in discussing iPadOS as we are now, we should remember that Apple has to balance for all users of iPadOS. That includes a broad range of humanity. My appeal to fellow advanced users/professionals is to remember that context, that larger user base.

And a point about the “What’s a computer?” video you referenced and which is commonly cited by tech folk as evidence that Apple has marketed to professionals to switch to the iPad Pro. It seems obvious to me that an ad featuring a regular iPad being used by a teenage student doing school things and having fun with friends is not a professional user with an iPad Pro.

The point of that ad was simply marketing to a general audience (especially kids and parents of kids) that the iPad might be a great, durable, fun, easy to-use school computer.

The answer is obvious, Apple needs a new OS: iPadProOS. :joy::grimacing::flushed:

I don’t fit in either of those groups, yet it’s 50/50 whether the iPad Pro or my Mac Studio is my most commonly used computing device in a given week. For me the iPad gets used for the tasks where it shines and the Mac gets used for tasks that play to its strengths.

Sorry, gaslighting was a strong word. I meant to edit that out for something less incendiary before posting.

My plea still stands. We don’t actually need anyone to defend the general public here, Apple’s iPad revenues do that just fine.

It is possible to imagine a better iPadOS for professional use without abandoning humanity writ large.

Loving this thread, and must say, I’ve been waiting quite some time for an iPad worth upgrading to. My trusty 2018 Pro is still going strong, but in applications like Affinity Designer it is slowing down quite a bit for advanced stuff like live view when using the vector brushes and saving large’ish projects.

When all is said and done, much more will be said than done, but I still hold the position that the iPad Pro is the most impressive computing device I have ever used. Not regretting my stupidly expensive order for the new one.

No, not at all. Many or most non-Apple ads tell me I’m #1, everything is about me, I can have it my way, that I “deserve” this or that, and I’m to “live my greatness.” Did I misunderstand those ads?

Not at all @Bmosbacker , “you’re worth it”!

That’s what I try to tell my wife, but she’s not buying it!

I’m not seeing any reference, expressly or by implication, to the MacBook Pro in that ad.

There seems to be a belief, both in this thread and the Apple commentariat as a whole, that Apple shouldn’t market the iPad as an alternative to the Mac until it can replace a Mac for their particular use case.

Are you saying he needs L’oreal?

Many years ago I learned the term caveat emptor, which is Latin for “Let the buyer beware”. It is the principle that the buyer alone is responsible for checking the quality and suitability of goods before a purchase is made.

IMO it is the job of Apple’s marketing department to sell Apple’s products, and my job to do my home work before buying any of them.

Yeah on the rare cases I’m reading or listening to something of his now I’ll just skip any time he mentions iPads. He feels so deep down his own rabbit hole at this point that I don’t find he has anything of value to add anymore.

No worries, it’s understandable, the iPad stirs our deepest passions. :joy:

Agreed 100%

That is always good consumer advice, but it does not absolve a company from the ethical requirement to be truthful in advertising. I’m not suggesting that Apple is untruthful; I’m stating a general principle.

Given the ad was made in 2017 I’m pretty sure that’s a 10.5" iPad Pro. The non-Pro iPad didn’t support the Smart Keyboard we see her using until the 7th generation came out in 2018.

One of the things that’s helped broaden the appeal of the iPad as a computer alternative is the proliferation of what were originally iPad Pro features and accessories to other models in the line.

Doh! Yeah, you’re right! That said, still seems like that’s more oriented to the youth market rather than the pro market. Lol, perhaps it’s meant to say “Hey, you, yeah, you, the stodgy adult professional. Look what this kid can do with her iPad! Step it up!”

It sure was! I really liked that ad at the time. I bought a 9.7in Pro for college in 2016. Back then, iPad Pros were a lot cheaper. The base model started at $599 (same as the Air today). It was the only one that supported the pencil and keyboard case. The 10.5in Pro introduced a bigger screen and ProMotion display but was still just $649. Definitely in the realm of affordability for a college student. Lots of kids had them just for taking notes. Everyone I know nowadays just buys the Air, it really has completely replaced the old Pros for most people.
