You Don’t Have to Be a Fan of Microsoft to Appreciate This Article: “REVENGE OF THE SOFTIES”

My condolences.

We are all doing our best in a morally muddled world.

As of August 2024, 63.38% of global web traffic came from mobile devices. So it appears there are still some people using them

there are dozens of us! As someone who made a big stink about going Light Phone I am doing my part to keep Desktops alive!

For uninteresting reasons (Forza, Halo), I own a Series X and a PS5. Even with GamePass, the Series X gets very little play time from me. It’s mostly used for 360 games, Forza Horizon games, and… yeah, that’s it. And thanks to their new strategy about migrating their games to PS, I eagerly await Forza’s debut on the PS side, at which point it seems nuts to have an Xbox sitting around just for 360 emulation.

My wife not being the gamer got me an X-Box over the PlayStation and because I am a good husband I am an X-Box player dag nab it.

It is a great machine. But Microsoft should be doing more with it. Tablets, Handhelds, TVs. Honestly just license XBoxOS ala Windows style and let OEMs go nuts and flood the market before SteamOS takes over.

I have both a PS5 and Xbox, and they both get about equal play time, thanks to exclusives on each side. I like the PS5 controller better, but so few games support the feedback features, it has become irrelevant to me. I think they are pretty equal, other than that Xbox prices tend to be better, especially when you get a month of game pass to play any of the big name games and then cancel it when you are done.

I would rather game on a PC though, so my PC gets more use than both combined.

Strong disagree here. MS tried to make it an “entertainment machine” at launch and it failed, so they went back to it’s mostly a game machine, that can do other stuff. Plus MS is just not good at hardware, or the very least, they are too slow and get beat by their competitors. Much like Apple, they don’t really follow through. They release something like the Surface Duo, and then it just kind of dies and disappears.

Why do you think SteamOS is going to take over? Steam Machines failed, but they are going to try again apparently. The Steam Deck is awesome, but I see a lot of people buying the PC based versions on gaming forums now, so it is under some fierce competition.

Smart man.

Well Steam is the dominant store on PC which just has to get under Microsoft’s skin.

Also, it’s why I would license it out to the other OEMs. The X-Box Operating system could serve as a nimbler alternative to Windows. All the coverage I have seen of Windows handhelds have been “great but Windows has issues.”

Also I wish Microsoft committed to the Duo for the long haul but they needed a normal Android phone to go with it.

They did exactly that though, and then no one wanted it. Maybe this time it will be different? (I have only seen the headlines about a new attempt at a Steam Machine, but haven’t read them.)

I remember considering getting one, but even if they were cheap, why would I buy a box that is more limited than a PC and can’t be upgraded?

But having Windows on them opens them to all the other stores/games and other uses, so it has it drawbacks (flakey Windows), but it also has it’s advantages (more games/stores). A lot of people seem to install Windows on their Steam Decks, at least on the forums I visit. People mod them to have bigger SSDs, better fans, etc.

When did they do that I am only aware of XBox being closed to Microsoft only?

Sorry getting Steam/Xbox stuff confused. Was talking about the Steam Machine getting sold for out for OEMS and failing.

Why doesn’t MS let 3rd parties make Xboxes using the system? Because no one would want to. Xbox systems lose money. They sell them at a loss in order to sell games for them. That is why people who hate Apples 30% say it’s ok for the MS/Sony, because every time any Xbox game is sold, they get a 30% cut (although no doubt they have deals in place with bigger publishers).

Plus this all goes back to why? No one is calling for more SteamOS or Xbox OS like systems when almost everything run on both is already on Windows. Both are far too limited compared to Windows. Some people here might hate to admit it, but people really do like Windows 10/11.

You are not wrong. The only Windows I interact with is at work and I generally like it despite being a MacOS lifer. Certainly better then when I switched in the Vista era.

Honestly, if I am really honest I am Switch above all when it comes to Gaming. This XBox and Switch are my first consoles since the PS1. So it hits the nostalgia buttons for me. I mainly play the AAA Star Wars games on XBox

It depends on what games you like, but all the best games are Windows only. Although a lot of the more niche stuff makes it on to the consoles nowadays which is pretty cool. I believe I read Civ 6 was a huge hit on the Switch, seems crazy to me as someone who likes a mouse for those kind of games.

Edit: I am an idiot for calling Civ 6 “niche” but it not the traditional console kind of game.

I wish the iMac had “monitor mode” I would totally build an epic rig where I build my own PC and hook it up to an iMac and flip between the two.

And here I am just enjoying my PS5 and musing about a PS5 Pro. Last Xbox I had before the Series X was an OG model, and I’ll probably skip another 2-3 gens before updating the Xbox. Just not enough there for me. I really like Sony’s exclusives, the trophy system is great, and I’m an RPG sort of person, so they have more games for me (not much into shooters).

Anyway. Back to Baldur’s Gate. Ta-ta.

Astro Bot’s full game made the PS5 worth it to me. Probably my game of the year.

AstroBot is awesome. I’ve also been really into Horizon Forbidden West, Gran Turismo, Dead Space, and the Elden Ring DLC this year. Fantastic console and far and away my favourite place to play.

I like my Xbox, but game pass just taught me that I really need to financially invest in a game or I’ll just treat it like a demo.

However, having been on the receiving end of MS totally screwing the inventors of stuff they then steal because they have deeper pockets and can hold us up in court long past what we can afford to litigate I will NEVER use MS products given any even remotely acceptable choice. It has nothing to do with their products but their business tactics which I absolutely abhor. My hatred for MS is overwhelming and very deep.

Completely understandable. Other than Apple and just about every other mega corp is guilty of the same thing.
