1Password 8 breaks one-time password integration

After updating 1Password this morning, I find that the developers have left us with a bit of a mess in regards to using one-time passwords. In 1Password 7 and its bundled extension, a one-time password would, in most cases, automatically fill in on a web page and when it didn’t, it was there to use instantly from the clipboard. With the new stand-alone extension, this functionality no longer works.

It tried to give them the benefit of the doubt and always had trust in what they were doing but I’m really struggling to keep a fast workflow in version 8 and the new extension model.

For the moment, I’ve reverted back to 1Password 7. Has anyone figured out a fast way to use one-time passwords in 1Password 8 ?

I have raised a ticket with 1Password and they say that the developers are looking for a work around and that the new standalone extension app does not have the deep integration that we previously enjoyed. But, apparently it looks nice.

I’ve not had this problem. But each time I log into a website using Safari, and 1PW logs me in, I’ve noticed that when I click on the 1PW extension button the current site is selected.

This should allow you to copy and paste the one-time password.

also no issue for me, it works like a chime for me. However, for my case, I set up the OTP from scratch using IP8 as I was using a separate (Saapass.com) to manage OTP. Since IP8, I recreated all the OTP again, may be that was the issue

Do you experience this with every 2FA you use, or only with specific kinds?

For me 2FA works perfect in most cases; it only fails on Microsoft logins so far (which my employer and my current customer both use for SSO unfortunately).

Perhaps I’ve just been spoilt by the way I used 1Password. One of the original ideas was that ⌘+\ was my password and 1Password would automatically fill it in with a quick hit of the key combo and a press of return. As above, that extended to the OTP which would either automatically fill in on the next screen or be copied to the clipboard for fast pasting.

Now, we can fill in the password as before but need to take extra steps to grab the OTP. There’s also the confusion of three places to go, the main app, the menu bar or Safari’s toolbar. 1Password 7 stays out of the way and just does its job. 1Password 8 needs you to know it’s there and demands more interaction to get the job done - at least with respect to one-time passwords.

I’ll keep watching MacUpdator in the hope of a fix. I’m happy to see 1Password advance but it should still be fast to interact with. Beyond the required password maintenance, it’s something I want to take for granted and not know it’s there until it pops up to protect both me and my data.

After a few days with 1Password support I’ve discovered that the bug relates to the keyboard shortcut that activates the password fill - but only in Safari.

  • Using Command + Backslash both fills the login and commits it. This is when some One-Time passwords fail.
  • Use the icon clicks or weblink from the main 1Password app and the login needs to be committed manually - and then the OTP gets automatically filled.

Other browser extensions work with the keyboard shortcut.

This time I’ve left 1Password 8 installed… I just have to explain to my wife that she might have to do more clicks to get her passwords to fill. :grinning:
