1Password and Safari profiles on macOS

Been using 1Password for years now and the last couple years the Safari experience hasn’t been great since the introduction of version 8.

That was until I’ve decided to give Safari profiles a go. The Safari extension crashes constantly throughout the day and regularly have to quit Safari for it to start working again.

I mean, being a software developer myself, I get that bugs do exist etc. but I thought the switch to a subscription model allowed them to offer a better experience and not the other way around?

Literally, since they pushed people to the subscription model, the product is getting worse and worse. I don’t get it.

Been thinking that the new Apple Passwords app is worth a try when the new iOS/macOS versions are out.

Rant over

I only have the occasional problem with Safari on Mac, and that may be because it is constantly getting security patches.

Are you working with profiles?

Profiles? No

For me it’s worked well until a few months ago. The only reliable way to use it is to run 1Password app separate and copy and paste into the login fields (not rely on the plug-in). So the question is, is it a problem with Safari or 1Password? For conspiracy theories, see the thread Sherlocked Apps

This is seriously annoying. I use 1Password with Safari across my profiles and I don’t have any trouble with it and have not had a crashing problem. I’m not saying that to add more annoyance to your already annoying situation, but to say that the extension can work like it’s supposed to.

At first I had issues until I enabled it across the different profiles. Maybe you already did this, but I had to select the puzzle piece icon, select manage extensions, and then enable 1Password on the profile. I don’t know if this is even the problem you are facing; I appreciate that you’re a developer and may well know a basic thing like this. Just disregard me if I have it wrong.

If you have enabled it on all the profiles you want access to 1Password, and it’s still acting up, it could be some weird thing in your iPadOS settings and not a 1Password problem. Unfortunately, I have no troubleshooting suggestions for that issue. But I have had these kinds of iPadOS gremlins that were eliminated by the magical incantation of a settings-reset.

Ditto, FWIW. I use 1P across two different profiles. And while the plugin is buggier than the app, generally at least one of them does what I want with the autofill keyboard shortcut without breaking my stride.

I would agree 1Password has been more problematic in the Safari extension since v 8.

I don’t use Profiles (or if I do, I am not aware of how that happened).

I also find sometimes on my iPhone (current version of iOS) that I have to login via my password rather than face recognition much more frequently than the 2 week login requirement. With this one, though I am not sure if it is just some apps or all.

I have often found tomAlmy’s approach is the only reliable method on all my devices.

Unfortunately, I’ve tried your suggestion yes, it’s a known issue on the 1Password forum and they are investigating but there is no ETA.

Yeah, I would agree it’s rock solid that way, but then again what’s the point of paying for the most premium password manager on the market? I would just go back to using Bitwarden if I were to resort to ditching the extension.
