1Password versus Passwords

I’m not going to re-litigate the differences already covered in other threads. I’m just putting this in public so I will actually do it, if one thing comes to pass tomorrow.

If the Passwords app just gains a little more flexibility on the types of items it can store — heck, even just independent secure notes (ex Notes) accessible from Passwords, then I will ditch 1Password.

Because it’s just been annoying me lately. It finally stopped informing me I have already saved a password for a site it just filled in for me. But it still takes 5… whole… seconds… after I invoke a login before it actually does anything. Also, Passkeys require too many taps to be truly convenient.

I’m over it. But… I have credit cards, bank accounts, some special codes, a bunch of software licenses, and more stored in there. Passkeys, codes, and logins just doesn’t cut it as a feature set.

Also, at the height of my love for 1Password, I evangelised it so much, I pay for the family license and it’s expensive given how much it gets used (not very much) by other family members.

I have a similar conundrum but not with 1Password against Passwords, it’s with Strongbox vs Passwords (and I have the lifetime license!). The latest changes in Passwords make it a reasonably good credential manager and I could store my “secure notes” in some other place.

I switched all my family and found the transition pretty painless. I agree that other types of data would be great. For now, I use a locked note for each family member in Notes, which isn’t ideal but works. I haven’t had any issues with filling passwords, and I store all my credit cards in Safari.

For the rest of my family (including my 84 year old mother), they didn’t even notice the change!

I assume this isn’t a troubleshooting thread either.

Hoping you get cool new features in a few hours!

I’m with you. I really like Passwords but it’s not quite enough to replace 1Password yet. I did a trial of it for about 3 months and moved back to 1P. The 3rd party app Access to manage my license keys and other codes helped, but it’s not as useful. It still lacks autofill with a Safari extension. The developers said it was coming and now a year later it’s still not here.

I think we can say more about Passwords from the day tomorrow.
Betas of the new OS - with updated Passwords - will be available.

OTOH I just set up a new 1Password vault and Service Account for an automation project I’m working on.

1Password is so far ahead of Passwords in terms of functionality for power users…

Wait, what? Autofill with Passwords works fine for me.

It does, sorry if I wasn’t clear.

Managing additional items like license keys, identity information, credit cards, non-web related passwords, encryption keys, etc, is a big use case for me with 1Password. When I trialed the Passwords app in place of 1P, I used the Access app that is marketed as a missing link between Passwords and other more robust options like 1P.

That Access app is what is missing autofill still. I had reached out to the developer and they said it was coming, but I haven’t seen much traction on the app in the last year.

Ah, I see. It’s true that Passwords doesn’t support items other than passwords and frankly I won’t be surprised if it never does.

I just moved back to 1Password from Passwords. For those who use Passwords, how are you using browsers other than Safari? The Chrome extensions are awful. It’s a terrible experience on anything other than Safari.

I found it incredibly annoying to have to reauthorize the extension with 6-digit codes every time I restarted the browser.

Big update to Access today with their v3 release. We finally have AutoFill!

Also shared groups, reminders, favorites, and an archive.

A few days ago I decided to take another look at Passwords (even though my stated hope didn’t eventuate). As soon as I tried to copy one password over I again realised why I prefer 1Password.

Then I looked again at how much it costs — $ per year and all the stuff that would have to be shoehorned somewhere else — and decided it’s still good value. I just wish it would be more responsive. I did a complete removal and reinstall which sped it up. For a few days.

I haven’t used 1Password for the past six months. Instead, I rely on a combination of Apple Passwords and locked Apple Notes for storing things like medical cards, app licenses, and other sensitive information. This approach has served me well and doesn’t cost anything extra. Of course, everyone’s needs are different, but this setup is working well for me.

Same here. Passwords + a couple of secure apple notes. (The only time I miss 1password is when I am using the DIA browser, since there’s something wonky with the iCloud passwords sync, that, presumably, the will fix soon.)

That said, I’m going to give 1password another try. I’ve been away from it a year, they have a free 2 week trial, and it’s not especially expensive if it’s better.

I think it is better, but not “better enough” for me to pay for it.

Agreed. The process of transferring everything to 3+ different buckets to make it work, and then transferring family, and then updating it after a year or two when Apple adds a feature they ought to have always had will take more man hours than the cost of just paying for it.

Checking back in a week after the v3 of Access and I’ve fully moved back to Passwords as well. 1Password was frustrating me. I’m finding Passwords more reliable. The biggest improvement is the reliability of Hide My Email vs 1Password’s Masked Email generation with Fastmail. The latter didn’t work 90% of the time for me. Mainly because it never prompted me to make one, like it didn’t detect the email field. Passwords is also more reliable at adding MFA codes IME.

The combination of Passwords and Access is really good. I do miss a few 1P features like more robust password generation options and security question generation. I can work around those.

True. My beef & cheddar combo at Arby’s yesterday cost more than 6 months of 1Password. :grinning:
