I was listening to the discussion of identity fusion, particularly around that common icebreaker, “what do you do?” And how it implies “what is your work?” It got me thinking about my own habits when meeting somebody new. I’m a physician, and in the area of medicine I practice, most of my patients are unable to work, so they’re either disabled or retired (if older). It’s also important for me to assess their activity levels. Since I can’t ask about work most of the time, instead I ask “how do you spend your day? What kind of things do you do?” After listening to your discussion about how fusion of work with self-identity is probably not a great thing, I may try to start using those questions outside of the clinic too.
