FWIW on losing FireWire;

I have been archiving my family’s miniDV tapes, doing the adapter chain and it works like a charm. Now I need to wrap that project up before I update.
I recognize there are services you can send your tapes to but I like the DIY nature of it, and also, are any of those companies depending on Mac’s?

I would bet that they have special-purpose hardware.
