Adios BBEdit.. drawing the line here

I find interesting how the Sonoma “new feature set” is not exactly exciting while the developers are having a hard time updating their apps. What’s going on under the hood?

In this case, “not optimised” is not synonymous with “doesn’t work”. They are really pushing for people to buy the upgrade, of course, and apparently the last (?) version 4 release will nag you to upgrade if you are running on Sonoma.

I can see that that is technically a valid reading of what the dev says, but any advice from a developer that tells you to avoid installing Sonoma reads to me as “there will likely be problems, and we don’t support it.”

I would argue that a reasonable user doesn’t ignore advice like that and just try pushing their luck to see whether something works despite the warnings.

Which, of course, is exactly what the developer is probably counting on.

My guess would be that Sonoma is deprecating old APIs and trying to march devs toward the “unified codebase for macOS/iOS/iPadOS” stuff that they’ve been pushing the past couple of years.

In my case I was running Sonoma Beta on a second Mac and had no issues with Bartender 4. For some reason I didn’t test BBEdit on it so didn’t discover that problem until my main computer (on which I use BBEdit daily) got upgraded to Sonoma seemingly without me asking. Fun days!

Wow, good tip. Thanks!
