Adobe exec: pricing strategy as ‘a bit like heroin’

I do it just for Stuart Varney in my car… all the sports and other stuff is just extra. I only listen to 5 podcasts so they are not enough.

Last year I started the process of cancelling my Adobe subscription because I wasn’t able to work for medical reasons.

They sucked me back in by offering a discounted rate, which I believe was good for at least one year. All fine and good.

Prior to that change, I wasn’t under contract. Cancelling would cost me nothing. The replacement was heavily marketed to me as a reduced monthly rate. There was no clear mention that I am now under a contract and thus subject to quite punishingly high early termination fees.

I’m sure it was somewhere in the details, but it was obfuscated. And that’s what I think is objectionable.

Since I’m not even sure when this new plan started (my poor health really hammered my memory), I logged into my Adobe account to check. There’s no information — just that I’m on an “annual plan” that is billed monthly. The available invoices only go back 6 months (another objectionable offense). There’s no information about when my plan renews, or what happens if I cancel. In order to get this information, I have to back out of my account info and begin to cancel. And even then, Adobe doesn’t tell me when my plan actually ends. It just gives me what I have to pay.

To add to that frustration, I cannot make that fee match what their web site says I should pay. There’s a very clear chart that says it is applicable for North America (where I am). Since I don’t know what month my annual plan ends, I can’t figure out why they’re charging me this amount.

So yeah, there’s room for improvement.

I just went to my account, and clicked on Invoices. The first page alone shows every monthly invoice all the way back to 2021, so quite a few more than 6 months. I then click on Orders and it shows every time I “signed the annual contract”, including the exact date.

Click on your orders (these are the Annual paid monthly subs).
Look for the most recent one.
Add 364 days to the date shown.

@margaretamartin hopefully this will help. The dropdown menu that shows Orders can be changed to Invoices. All the info you need will be there.

Thanks for the explanation, @macsorcery. I think it proves my point.

I navigated to this page by selecting “view billing history”, and it indeed shows only the invoices for the current plan (8, not 6, in my case — I made an assumption here, due to my earlier frustration). There’s a mysterious long jumble of letters and numbers at the top search field which suggests that it relates to these invoices, but it’s not clear what it means. Is it yearly or monthly? Clicking on it erases the number, like a typical search bar. It then shows more invoices (all 3 years Adobe claims in the very small grey-on-grey text at the bottom of the page).

However, I didn’t see any additional invoices because the page did not noticeably refresh, there’s no scroll bar, and they are below the edge of my browser window. I didn’t accidentally scroll the page, so I didn’t have no idea that they were visible.

Finally, it never occurred to me to click on “Orders and Invoices” in the sidebar on the left because it’s already highlighted.

I won’t belabor this any longer. To me, it seems that a company as wealthy as Adobe should be doing a better job. Each invoice itself should include the period of time of the contract. Better yet, it should include the calculation about how much more you owe and what you would owe if you cancelled before the next invoice.

But, as that heroin quote said, Adobe is hooked on the extra fees that this (customer-hostile?) interface generates.

You should get an email a month before the annual subscription renews.

To be honest, it’s very cheap in India and Adobe has the most affordable creative products. The education discount normally brings Creative Cloud All Apps to 1276.76 INR / month (~15 USD) but with the promo they are running right now, it’s half that price.

I canceled my Photography Plan subscription last month, and to be honest, I was surprised at how easy and quick it was. I was prepared for a really complex and convoluted cancellation process with tons of headaches (knowing it’s Adobe), but it was surprisingly smooth.

It was an annual plan paid monthly, and I ended it at the end of the year. It wasn’t hard to understand how this license works.

I try to avoid talking about politics here. I think we all should. This isn’t the place for it.

But since you’ve chosen to cross that line, in the interest of balance I’ll just point out a couple of things.

First, I’m glad the current president has decided to put aside his own ego and pass the baton for the good of the country.

Second, the former president who continues to run for another term would never put aside his own ego for anything or anyone. And he is orders of magnitude more unfit for office than his successor or his current opponent—cognitively, ethically, emotionally, temperamentally, and in terms of mendacious behavior. You ought to be able to see that with your own eyes, too.

Finally, I have no problem with the mods removing your comment and my reply, in the interest of keeping this forum from running off the rails.

whew… for a minute I thought there would be a but… so glad y…

damn.

Disappointing move into political discussion.

It is all too easy, especially in a political season, to cross the line into politics in any discussion. I know I’ve come very close to the line myself, perhaps even inadvertently crossing it at times.

This is a useful thread, let’s move on from any discussion of politics to avoid this thread being deleted.

& @Bmosbacker I’ll just note that it started a week ago and no one called it out then. But I wasn’t going to leave that political attack standing without a reply.

I was not referring to your comment, or those of others, specifically; I was speaking more generally and acknowledging that it would be easy for any of us (including me) to cross that line. :slightly_smiling_face: I always appreciate your comments and recommendations.

I agree, and I’ve always tried to avoid it. If @karlnyhus deletes his political comment I’ll be happy to delete my reply.

Either way, I never have and don’t plan on initiating any political discussions here. But if someone puts up a political sign on MPU’s lawn and it’s allowed to remain up, in fairness I reserve the right to put one up with a different viewpoint.

And I had just posted in another thread that Godwin’s law has never been a problem in MPU. :fearful:

Fair point - I had missed it previously.

it costs you nothing to just ignore it.

Adobe have been like this for years, it’s how they keep revenue up in a really competitive arena (especially these days when there are a million cheaper alternatives). I’ve used their tools for over 25 years and I simply cannot afford the time to learn others so I’ve never been without a subscription in all those years!

Thankfully, I haven’t been paying out of my own pocket - which I’m sure is the same for the bulk of their users. The first thing I demand when I start a new job is Mac + Apple display, the second is a full Adobe Creative Cloud sub. I’ve never been refused either from employers in recent years. I’m lucky as I never have to deal with the hidden surprises in their contracts.

If I had to pay myself, I would not enjoy dealing with them and their consumer unfriendly hidden clauses. I expect I will never have to deal with it as I have too much data in their formats to ever be able to leave :disappointed:
