As much as I try to understand “aggregate devices” and try different configurations, I still don’t fully understand it. There’s the aggregate device, there’s the multi output device, then some options on the left sidebar have a Mute option, some don’t…
So I downloaded the app Blackhole, which seems to be necessary to connect apps.
I have Loopback that does what I need called, but I wonder if I can emulate it by using the native Audio-MIDI Setup window along with BlackHole?
Most, if not all, of what Loopback does is make stuff easier. The fact it is only setting up native OS objects is evident from the fact you don’t need to leave Loopback running to use the devices you create.
That ease of use is very powerful, particularly if you want to frequently change things, even such as muting/un-muting things as required.
I have successfully set up routing devices using the native tools, but that was a long, long time ago and about all I remember of it was it being incredibly confusing. I still get a little confused at times with Loopback, but it’s easy enough to try something and when it doesn’t work, flip a switch and see if that helps, etc.
Thank you for your feedback.
Yes, Loopback does its thing and it’s visually more appealing and easier to work with than the messy aggregate devices route. I wish Apple could come up with a more 2024 approach rather than that 1980’s workflow
