Ran on this car last night with the only indication that there was an accident was an alert to 911 from an Apple Watch. If the watch had not alerted 911 they could have been out there from hours until someone noticed them. They were in a very rural area. Transported the more serious patient but I don’t think either of them were in the right state of mind to call for help.
The more calls I run on where the Apple Watch has alerted 911 of an accidnet the more and more I appreicate what Apple has done to help people.
From the news article…
“…it was initially a signal from an Apple Watch that detected that its wearer had been involved in a crash around 2:11 a.m…”
The picture is from the local news coverage and does not violate HIPAA.
I’m also really impressed with the safety features and have since turned them on for myself. Having been hit by a car while riding a bike, I realize how quickly things can go sideways.
Wow. I was once hospitalized after a car accident, and I can tell you the vehicle was mangled, but not like that. If the occupants are alive, I’m also impressed (once again) by automotive safety technology…
But yes, I made sure to switch on all the crash and fall detection features my current watch has…
@Ben_Wah How did you know it was from an Apple Watch? What do you get on your end that tells you it’s an Apple Watch? Could it be from an iPhone also? What kind of car is that, I’m not a car guy at all but kinda looks like a Tesla.
I’m curious what the watch says to the dispatcher.
I’m not trying to sound like a jerk, I’m not questioning you, just very interested in this stuff and seems hard to find information out unless you get in an accident.
The watch sends an alert directly to the local 911 dispatch center with coordinates and when they dispatched this out it was in the notes that the initial signal had come from an Apple Watch. I’m not entirely sure if the signal that is sent to dispatch specifies if it comes for a watch or phone but dispatch on this one said it was from a watch.
We thought it was a Tesla at first as well, as per the Sheriffs deputy that arrived first, but it turned out to be a Hyundai Stinger.
I’m not sure. It might depend on the nature of the crash. I don’t think my series 3 was set off in the crash I was in; I think it had fall detection – I have a vague memory that it did once go off on a rollercoaster shortly after I got it, but they might have been the regular SOS function.
