Does anyone know what this number is on my iPhoto icon on my MacBook? I haven’t been able to find anything about it and it’s kinda annoying!
If you have shared an album and allowed comments on your photos in that album, then the badge would mean that someone has left a comment that hasn’t been read yet.

Like @anon41602260 already has stated, it could be an unread comment on a photo in a shared iCloud photo album.
A second possibility is that somebody has saved a new photo to a shared iCloud photo album.
If you do not care about those notifications and if you want to get rid of this badge without looking at those comments/photos, you can disable the badge:
Visit System Preferences - Notification - Photo and untick the option badge app icon.
