App for Creating Beautiful Timelines?

I want to create a very nice timeline of the development of AI to insert into a Pages document. Do you know of an application that you would recommend?

I like Lucidchart.com for this kind of project.

I don’t have any real experience with this. Looked at v1 years ago. May be worth looking at.

Some years ago I used BeeDocs Timeline 3D. Haven’t used it in a while and it has some pretty negative reviews on the App Store.

I own Aeon Timeline and it’s a decent tool, though it does have a bit of a learning curve on terminology and how all the aspects relate.

I used it to chart my Dad’s career in the RNZAF, plotting his rank, unit, base, and aircraft type so I could visually relate those aspects.

I found the output styles to be decent, though I would have liked a little more control.

This is an in-app view. Different colours represent the different aspects I was tracking.

I use an outline format, with years being level 1, months level 2, specific days level 3.

Have you looked at youexec.com templates. Really sharp.

Lucidchart is very good, but not worth buying a subscription to make one diagram.

I would use Keynote – it’s free, you have it if you have a Mac, and there are lots of short how-tos + templates for making timelines with Keynote just a Google search away. Keynote is a very proficient tool for making nicely-designed simple diagrams. You can import the result into Pages or screenshot it and paste.

I had not thought of that. I’ll do some searching and give it a try. Thanks!

If you are a google workspace user Sheets now has a timeline view.

If you want a plain text / markdown version, there’s MarkWhen

I haven’t tried it but it looks appealing, and there now seems to be a web version

I used this in the past

+1 I’ve used this heavily for programme timelines in presentations at work. It’s great.

Try EventViewpoint you can create timelines and see your events on an interactive timeline, list, map and slideshow view. You can even create Wikipedia style articles for your timelines.

I recently used Gemini / NotebookLM to make infographic-style timelines as well as a few that were best done as Gantt charts.

By way of example, I gave Gemini (Nano Banana) this prompt

Using your best design skills, make me an infographic style timeline of the major events in Diane Arbus’ life and career.

And got this result in under five minutes.

I usually opt for a more detailed prompt to get something in the style and level of detail that suits my purpose. But for a quick and dirty example, this isn’t bad.
