I’m looking for an app that will enable me to capture a scrolling screen. For example, I’m trying to capture the entire book outline in Scrivener but as you can see, I can’t capture what lies beyond the screen. Is there an app for that?
CleanShotX can do it but I think you’re not a SetApp subscriber so you may be looking for a less expensive option ($29/one time, $8/mo).
I don’t want a subscription, but a one-time purchase for $29 is fine. I’ll wait to see if I get other suggestions and then I’ll buy. Thanks!
Another vote for CleanShot X. I’ve been using it for years and it continues to impress!
I’ve also heard good things about Shottr. You can use Shottr uninterrupted for 30 days. After that, you’ll be prompted to consider paying for the app. A license currently costs $12 (USD).
+1 for Shottr. I’ve used it for two years and “buy” it once a year to help keep the dev going.
You can capture a video of it using the Mac’s built-in Screen Recording feature. You could also just capture stills in sequence, ensuring a line or so overlap for each. If you need them all in a single file, it’s pretty easy to bring them in as layers in an image editor, resize the canvas and just stack them up on top of each other.
Use the arrow keys and layer opacity to get pixel perfect alignment, or simply crop in the middle of a line space.
+1 for CleanShot X here. It’s such a wonderful app and if I didn’t have a Setapp subscription I’d still buy it
One of Setapp’s greatest. Cleanshot is like a swiss army knife its nuts. It’s so good its even integrated into Raycast!
I prefer CleanShotX as I get it for free with SetApp but Shottr is also a good option. I recently made a video on this very same topic.
You can read the written guide if you prefer.
CleanShotX is worth the price. It is amazing.
Your book looks very interesting!!
Another one here for Shottr.
Thanks for the advice, everyone. I used the one-time purchase option for CleanShotX. I look forward to using it. Thanks again!
Depending what your purpose is in wanting the entire screen why not use the existing macOS Screenshot and recording options shortcut (default ⌘⇧5) and limit the capture to the Scrivener Binder region?
Because, unfortunately, I did not realize that was possible with QuickTimePlayer. Oh well, now I have two options.
I only learned about it a month ago despite being a Mac user for over 20 years(*) now! (I use it in conjunction with Blackholl to capture video content for private research.)
(*) Longer if I include my excursions with System 6 & 7.
Well, I feel better now, knowing that. I was feeling like a goober there for a moment.
No one is to blame for not realizing that something called “QuickTime Player” could also record the screen.
Thanks. It is a labor of love but also a slog because it is large–too large I suspect.
I have a similar experience with one of my books – my “ten year project”. It has to explode to gargantuan size before one transitions to the (tedious) phase of trimming it down significantly. Please let us know on this forum or on the Scrivener forum when you publish it.
