If accurate, I can’t say I’m surprised. Time will tell if the story is true, but I’ve never thought that the Vision Pro met real needs for most people, particularly at that price point and the need to wear such a contraption on one’s hand.
Interesting. I don’t know how to square this report with Ternus’ comments regarding the Vision Pro in a recent interview with Tom’s Guide.
Yes, I was thinking the same thing.
Have they actually been working on it? Hard to tell from the 2nd version they released that was barely an update at all.
My Vision Pro sits in the closet unused mainly because it is a terrible product. It is heavy and uncomfortable and is really only good for watching the immersive videos of which there are very few.
I’m probably in the extreme minority, but I use the Vision Pro regularly. The updated head strap Apple released with the second generation made it much more comfortable to wear for prolonged periods.
I literally use mine everyday. The new strap is a game changer.
I use mine everyday too. Hope the news isn’t true!
It just occurred to me…
Vision Pro = Touch Bar for your face.
A product (or piece thereof) that broke new ground to deliver a commendable first iteration, only to be left in its original state with little attention until ultimately being widely ridiculed as a gimmick and failure.
Yes, I know there are people (even on this thread) who love and continue to use their Vision Pro. I also loved and continued to use the Touch Bar (improved by Better Touch Tool) until my next laptop upgrade just didn’t have it as an option.
See also the Clips app and, probably, the Invitations app. Although in the latter case there are actually updates for it.
Sounds like Siri.
Hopefully, though, Siri is about to be fixed.
@jacobio @ptgn123 @Sue_Waghorn mind sharing briefly what your daily use is? I have not bought one but continue to be tempted. (Or if you’ve written about it before, just give me some keywords to search!)
Pretty much any video I’m watching is through Vision Pro. 3d movies are amazing on it. Immersive videos will blow your mind. Using it to have a giant display for my m4 Mac mini.
Maybe if they expanded the market for Vision Pro it might do better. It has already been through one (minor) hardware revision and yet remains available in only a single country. It’s like they haven’t been sure they’re going to stick with it from the very beginning.
Mind you… Apple News is how many years old now and still only available in a handful of countries. And no, I don’t mean News+. I mean the basic Apple News app. Oh, and the longest one of all… TV shows on iTunes. Now well and truly sherlocked, but was only ever available in a handful of countries. Bizarre.
I can’t believe they designed it with so much weight in the headset. Why didn’t they offload every possible component to the battery unit?
But if I had one that’s lighter weight, I think I’d still only use it when traveling.
I’m sure if Apple had offered it in more countries, more people would have purchased one. But, IMO, it would have never sold enough to make it a success by Apple’s standards. The same may be true about the Apple News app, etc.
Apple, I’m sure, knows how often we use the apps on our devices, and they know who subscribes to their services. And sometimes the math in the countries where things are offered says it’s not worth expanding to other areas?
I was never interested in the Vision Pro. And I’ve never seen anyone at the VP table in the five or six times I visited an Apple Store since it was first released. IMO the price alone killed any interest in the device for most people.
It’s not for sale in my country, but I believe one can buy it in Germany and France (or the US)?
This is really no suprise at all. The Vision Pro was a product of the metaverse hype and while it was the best headset out there, the general public is never going to go for a product that looks like goofy ski goggles and costs thousands.
What normal people want is a pair of glasses with a display, and a product that is affordable. The Meta glasses are already eveywhere where I live, and Vision Pro has never been released here.
Here’s a use case from somebody that I know:
He’s treating it like a giant portable monitor. Great for multitasking
Absolutely. As someone who wears glasses all the time what I want is something that puts useful information discretely in my field of vision or in an earphone. It doesn’t need compute, my phone has more than enough power for that, rather it can be an adjunct to phone apps on the same way as the Apple watch. And it really needs to work with Siri.
You may be right; there will probably be a large market for smart glasses. However, the last thing I want is digital anything in my glasses. If anything, I want less digital, not more, in my life.
That said, the exception would be accessibility features. For those with serious eye problems, if such glasses help them, or help me later in life, that would be a blessing. But I do not want directions, definitions, translations, object recognition, or anything else in my glasses.
My guess is it will take at least two years before anyone releases a pair of smart glasses with a display that I might be interested in buying. In the meantime, my Apple Watch and an AirPod are all I need for most things.
