I have mostly enjoyed Apple News on my 11" iPad Pro for several years, but the sometimes-small print is increasingly difficult to read. Reading web browser-based articles is not problem - you can simply use the reverse-pinch gesture to expand the screen slightly. This is not allowed within the Apple News app, however.
Is there any fix for this? Perhaps a utility app that bypasses the block on the reverse-pinch-to-expand gesture?
I already know about the Accessibility setting using a 3-finger tap to zoom a portion of the screen. This feature is a bit fiddly and not particularly pleasant to use routinely.
There is a font size adjustment at the top of the page on Apple News (2 A’s). I assume this is not what you’re looking for. I don’t believe there is an app that makes the 3 finger move work inside Apple News
Correct, and thank you. I use this font size adjustment feature occasionally, particularly in low-light situations when your pupils are dilated. It is not quite as convenient as the reverse-pinch feature, however. And it’s not “sticky” - you must re-adjust the font size after re-launching Apple News.
Presumably (but I cannot confirm this) that the system-wide reverse-pinch-to-zoom feature is disabled to accommodate the extensive ads within the Apple News articles. Dynamically-inserted ads have an annoying habit of causing the ads and the text to jump about when the reverse-pinch-to-zoom feature is used with “too much” adjustment. You can avoid the annoying jumping about by limiting the amount of zoom to stay within the screen margins. That’s why I like the reverse-pinch feature - it’s intuitive and easy to adjust “just enough” to achieve the desired result.
Disabling the reverse-pinch feature is a rare misstep by Apple, which otherwise has good accessibility features to accommodate users’ disabilities or physical limitations. For a person in his mid 70s, I have reasonably good visual acuity. Even this is not good enough to resolve the sometimes too-small text size in some of the Apple News articles. The wide side margins are maintained at the expense of font size. Bad choice, in my opinion. And an equally bad choice to disable the reverse pinch-to-zoom feature.
Thank you. Is that new to iPadOS 18? I am still on version 17, waiting a bit to update. Is this a universal (all apps) setting? My issue is mostly for Apple News.
Yes, thank you. I use this macOS feature all the time; it’s permanently imbedded in my “muscle memory” - one of the many reasons I love macOS. My issue is with Apple News on the iPad.
It is not new to OS18, I used that feature before updating to iPadOS. I don’t know if it is “universal” but it works on a lot of the apps.
I primarily use that feature on the “Today” page as sometimes the titles or text can be too large or too small. I use the text resize icon to resize text within articles.
