Great price, great form factor. Very tempting!
I really do not have space for a desktop but… dang.
I always buy refurbished but… dang!
oh so tempting!!! I have the M1 Mac Mini and it’s been dragging lately. I open a lot of apps don’t get me wrong and it storms through. But after a while, search can get sluggish after a while.
The part I hate about upgrades….decided which chip and how much ram.
M1 was released by itself, no variations.
M4 vs M4 Pro - how to decide?
Max out the ram?
Storage - ? my current drive is 1TB….and I only have 250GB remaining. Almost 300gb is taken by my photo library that I prefer to keep local.
Decisions, decisions……

I’m hoping they will announce a new 5K display for it. There are some rumors.
I need to replace my 2020 27" iMac and don’t look forward to dropping 3 inches and 0.5K. Mac mini plus display makes more sense. But what display?
I’d be tempted to jump in on the base M4, max out RAM at 32GB, and do whatever storage you think you need.
I’m a web developer who’s a pretty heavy browser tab user, light video editing, etc. with an M1 MBA / 16 GB / 1 TB, and it’s still more than fine the majority of the time. Doesn’t mean I don’t want more though.
I’d personally save the money from the M4 Pro toward the next machine in 4-5 years.
I have an M1 Max machine and I am genuinely wondering if I should move downstream to the MX Pro chips next time. I really just needed 64GB of RAM, and since that’s now available in the Pro chips, well… I’ll see what the reviewers say about the new chips (especially Anandtech), but I’m not sure I’ll need the grunt of the Max any longer.
I use a lot of RAM, but I don’t use a lot of CPU or GPU compared to what my M1 Max offers me.
Ugggggggh I forgot. Terrible day.
I promised myself I wouldn’t get one, but I am tempted…that’s such a small form factor that the Mini is finally living up to it’s name in comparison to the small form factor machines that are out there these days!
Base model + external hard drive would be sufficient for me.
However, I know that macOS won’t play that nice with my 1440p screen so I’m going to have to think it about it.
It’s amazing how making the entry level RAM 16GB makes this SO MUCH more appealing at the entry level. Basically zero compromises. The performance/value ratio is out of this world - certainly blows away anything else at $600.
First I decided „I don’t want one“ but now my wife comes around asking about the new MacMini for her composing/Logic/samples tasks - guess I’m in the business for a mini now none the less .
Best thing may be it appears 3rd parties will be able to rack THREE of these in a 2U space.
I don’t know. I’ll miss the two USB-A of the previous mini. The form factor is nice but once it has all these dongles and cable coming out behind it, they might just tilt that poor little guy. I’m looking at my mini now and it’s being weigh down at the back.
Now we have to wait for Satechi to create a proper dock for it.
I have 3 monitors and a Satechi hub. Fortunately, my M2 Pro Mac mini has 4 USB-C ports. With the new Mac Mini, for Satechi to work, one of the monitor has to be connected via HDMI. It’s a shame there’s only 3 ports behind the mini.
I think that Apple is trying to bifurcate the previous audience for the Mini.
You are probably in the category that they would like to see go for the Studio. Lots of ports, most likely better thermals that allow better performance without throttling, etc.
The people who just want an inexpensive Mac where they could bring their own monitor, keyboard, etc. are the people that this new Mini is probably meant for.
Especially when you consider that many devices now are Bluetooth, three ports on the back is probably enough for the average non-power user use case.
You are right. In fact, this new mini is so small, it’s almost like a notebook that you can bring over to the office which has a monitor, mouse and keyboard. And you can disconnect and bring the mini home after that. The mini is half the price of an equivalent MacBook Pro.
If you stack them on their sides, in 3U you could get 9.
The largest problem with all of this is that the power button is now on the bottom, so not easily accessible if racked either flat or on it’s side.
With a M4 Pro chip and 64GB of ram, this is a powerhouse. If Apple was targeting this at people who want an inexpensive computer, there would be no Pro option.
