Apple’s Vision Pro positioning

An interesting data point for how Apple is positioning the Vision Pro: Julia Alexander (cohost of Downstream on Relay) recently got a demo.

Interesting because despite cohosting a podcast with Jason Snell, Julia is an entertainment industry analyst and commentator, not a tech journalist.

Much of the media does seem to have made up its mind about the VP.

“Apple and Disney announced that the Vision Pro will have 3D content from Disney Plus at launch . . . Other apps announced with Vision Pro support include ESPN, MLB, PGA Tour, Max, Discovery Plus, Amazon Prime Video, Paramount Plus, Peacock, Pluto TV, Tubi, Fubo, Crunchyroll, Red Bull TV, IMAX, TikTok, and MUBI. A notable omission from the list is Netflix; however, executives have previously said that the existing app will work unmodified on Apple’s new headset.”

Vision Pro apps: the good, the bad, and the ridiculous

The intro video and much of the commentariat seems focused on soft, discretionary applications, video, imaging. It seems the technology could better serve workers and the economy through integration into hard environments: engineering, construction, manufacturing, shipping, agriculture, field work or all sorts, transportation maintenance and control, etc. If it turns into just another gaming platform, it’s a bit of a wasted opportunity. Sometimes I wonder if Apple talks to (or even knows) any working class laborers.

Microsoft has concentrated in many of those areas in past years, with some success.
