I stumbled upon this article on TidBits:
It links to another article on a security expert site, commenting on a research paper from the University of Maryland.
Is this something to be concerned about, for us mere mortals?

AFAIK I have done nothing that would make me the target of a Hellfire missile. And I like being able to watch my local broadcast stations on my preferred streaming service. So I’m OK with things as they are. ![]()
Google’s Android devices also share the locations of nearby wifi SSIDs with Google for similar purposes, they don’t need to connect to the network .
Some apps which have been granted location services permissions, such as Firefox, may also share that information with their own companies or contracted location service providers.
Appending _nomap to your wifi network’s SSID allows you to opt out of having your wifi network mapped by nearby devices. At least by Apple & Google, not sure about other companies.
That Krebs writeup was good; thanks.
