Apple SOS via Satellite for the win!

This feature was one of the big reasons I upgraded when iPhone when it came out, now with the SMS via satellite I feel like if I ever get lost or injured while out hiking/camping I will be ok.

Was this a personal emergency you experienced or a story you read about somewhere else?

That’s a screenshot of what we get from dispatch when a call comes in, which is why I had to blackout a bunch of it.

I see, so you work as a first responder.

It’s rare that I’m out of cell phone range, but I did feel reassured last summer when we went to Acadia national park and had no cell signal. My wife had the iPhone 14 and we felt good that we could still get help in an emergency.

I think the first day I had the beta installed I was out on a trail and test texted a friend via satellite. It worked nicely and it a good thing to have, even if you don’t need it every day. It’s one of those features that will be indispensable when actually needed.

It’s neat to see how it looks on the dispatch side. Is it all Apple talking to them and updating your log?

I’m not entirely sure. If what I’m thinking, the device sends an SOS to a server which figures out its location and alerts the closest 911 center. They get the alert with a phone number attached and try to make contact. If they can’t make contact they at least have a grid location to start form and send out the appropriate resources.
