I’ve been waiting three years to buy an Apple Studio Display. And now…this? $3,299 for a 27 inch? Or $3,599 if you want nano glass. $4,000 with tax for 27 inches. It should be 6k 32” 120 Hz at that price level. Unbelievable. It’s like they don’t care about us, at all.
They don’t, they never did. Corporations are only interested in our money.
Those prices are for the new Apple Studio Display XDR. Apple also announced an updated Studio Display. I plan to buy the latter as I mentioned in this thread.
I’m happy for you, Tim. People love that display. But it’s pretty much the same as before. Personally, for that price I was hoping for a 120 Hz refresh rate, an improved camera, Face ID, and the ability to switch between the height adjustable mount and a VESA mount in the future.
They should have updated it to the specs of the Studio Display XDR, and that would be the new ASD at the lower price point. Then a 6K 32 inch at the XDR price point.
I was hoping for more, including a 120 Hz refresh rate. There have been improvements to the camera and audio (though I’ll likely continue to use my external webcam).
I would have preferred the XDR specs, but the new Studio Display is still a big upgrade from the Dell monitor I’ve been using for many years.
I look forward to reading about your impressions. ![]()
I was also hoping for more. It doesn’t take too much for me to pull the trigger on an upgrade. 120 would have done it for me. What I particularly don’t like is the fact that this will in all likelihood remain their standard for many more years. With Apple monitors you can’t simply wait a year or two and expect to have a new fancier thing available. With the price of competitor monitors falling so much and the increasing prevalence of 120 Hz monitors. I am puzzled that they stayed with 60. I have an Apple studio display now and it’s just fine and I’ll continue with it but I wanted to get something cooler.
What do you see as the benefits of the Apple monitor over competitors that justifies its higher price?
I’ve looked at other monitors, but keep coming back to the Studio Display. I like the aesthetics and build quality. It sounds like the speaker system is better than most (if not all) of the competition. Thunderbolt 5 will help future proof the display and I expect the built-in hub will serve me well.
I’ll be curious to try the built-in webcam and mic array, though I’ll likely use my existing webcam and mic most/all of the time.
I’ll be happy to report back once I have hands-on experience with the latest Studio Display.
Nothing that justifies it. But you get better build quality, looks, speakers, microphone, and webcam. And the Studio Display probably behaves better when it comes to wake/sleep etc., and is probably better colour calibrated out of the box.
The specs for the screen itself, on the base model, is pretty terrible by today’s standards. It’s tech from 2014 after all. (Anyone rocking an iPhone 6 out there?) But the total package is all right if you’re OK with over-paying for it and need things to be compact.
The new displays are not compatible with Intel Macs
Also, some M chips can’t run the studio display XDR at 120Hz
