I sometimes can’t figure out (quickly) what app icon is selected on my apple tv’s home menu. The icon is slightly larger but it doesn’t stand out, and sometimes I have to hunt the screen to figure out which app is currently selected.
Turns out you can change the menu:
High Contrast Focus Style
To make the selected icon stand out more clearly:
Go to Settings on your Apple TV
Navigate to Accessibility
Select Display
Find the “Focus Style” option
Change it to “High Contrast”
This setting will add a white outline around the selected icon, making it much easier to identify which app or menu item is currently highlighted
We changed the setting last night and finally, my wife and I have no difficulty identifying what is selected without first moving the cursor around!
Lots of apps obviously aren’t designed for over-50 eyes, more like 20s-30s. Fortunately, over the past year several apps that I use have upgraded in a way that allows fonts to be enlarged by the user. I hope that trend continues. Not many pay attention to age discrimination in app design.
Great tip. Your post inspired me to look for a High Contrast setting in the Accessibility tab under Mac OS. Toggling “Increase Contrast” affects the menus in Safari and other apps. I’m not sure that I like the new look, but that setting does help me quickly identify which tab in Safari is in focus.
