Apple TV YouTube app since tvOS 27

Situation:

  • Apple TV 4K, latest gen (so far), and tvOS 27.
  • Using the YouTube app.

Problematic behavior:

  • Audio frequently gets garbled, seemingly at random.
  • Audio almost guaranteed to go bad if I speed up the video (and I almost always speed it up, unless it’s a musical performance).

Sound destination changes nothing (headphones/TV/soundbar).
The YouTube app directly installed on the LG TV has no issue, fortunately. But I prefer going through the AppleTV as that is where so many other items are….

Any solutions or points for diagnostics will be appreciated.

With tvOS 27 (dev beta 2) with YouTube Premium (up-to-date), I get audio that cuts in/out (like someone clicking mute/unmute at a high rate of speed). I always use standard speed. I have found if I fast forward a few seconds, then go back, it returns to normal audio. Frustrating, but works.

Just a data point…,

The YT app is working fine for me. I had not noticed any issues at normal speed and just tried playback of a video at 2x and 0.75x. Both were fine.

Free YT but logged into a Google account.

Playback is from an ATV 4k (Lightning remote) connected to an LG TV which is connected to a Sonos Arc. Latest tvOS, YT app, and Sonos firmware versions.

This is how it is on my end:

  • Apple TV 4K 3rd gen (latest)
  • LG CX tv
  • Youtube app - Premium subscriber

The three different audio outputs I have/use and their experiences:

  • Default option: Using Airplay to transmit audio to Sonos Era 300 pair - used to work for normal and non-1x speeds for everything. Sometime during early tvOS 26, youtube started getting garbled and broken within 10 seconds of playing for anything that was not 1x. Everything else continues to work normally. For a bit during one version of tvOS27 beta it worked fine. Then it went back to having this or some other version of the problem.
  • Running audio through AirPods Pro (1 and 2). Everything works fine and is often my default solution.
  • Routing audio through the tvs speakers - which is definitely worse. Does work fine however.

Recently I decided to run a few tests with my mac mini on the TV and tested routing the audio in these same ways, but from the mac, and all of them worked fine at any speed from any source on the computer. I wonder if with the updates in recent versions and updates to youtube as well there just isn’t a problem with processing the sped up information and tvOS maybe can’t handle it as well.
