Apple Watch 9 and the two watch lifestyle

After purchasing my AW9, I set it up from the AW6 Backup and it was up and running pretty quickly.

I love the new sports band (Flourolstimer?) it’s so much softer than my previous one, I suspect that the 3 year old one has hardened. (Either that or Apple have made some fantastic improvements in that time frame). The AW9 is snappier than I expected in everyday use, e.g. swiping between faces (BTW, Apple has not added that setting to the backup, I had to switch it on again), turning my wrist and using Siri

At bed time, I went to put my new watch on my charging stand and suddenly realised I could wear my AW6 for bed, leaving the AW9 to charge overnight.

This has 3 massive benefits.

  1. No risk that on a busy day, I won’t have time to charge, or have to wait up for charging to finish
  2. it minimises the battery wear on the newer watch from extra charging, and
  3. I’ll start every day with 100% charge instead of at 85 - 80%

I’m now disappointed I didn’t make the purchase earlier and had been stressing about the battery so much.:rage:

The Midnight colour is not as beautiful as the blue :frowning:

I thought this was about alternating between a « dumb » watch and an Apple watch. Some watch people wear a mechanical watch on one wrist, and an Apple watch on the other. I think its a bit silly, so I alternate between my nice-looking watches and my Apple watch.

I did the same with an Apple Watch 8 and the Ultra 2. It didn’t last more than 3 months. Maybe because they’re so different? I couldn’t go back the regular screen after a few hours with the Ultra.

I kept the 8 though for some smart outfits and cause I have so many bands for that colour , but I barely use it anymore.

I have been living the two watch life for about a year. I wear an Apple Watch 7 as my primary watch during the day and wear my Apple Watch 4 for sleep. The Apple Watch 4 has a very basic face with just the time. When I wake in the middle of the night it is nice to just see the time and nothing else. I then put my Apple Watch 7 on in the morning with a full charge.

I tried the two-watch life for a little but found it annoying switching between the two on what was “active”. Decided it wasn’t worth it since I could find 30-60 minutes a day to charge.

I pretty much just use the AW6 for monitoring while I’m asleep and as an alarm.

The difference between the AW6 and the 9 is not massive.

Yeah I know what you mean, I tried something slightly different, to actually rotate between the watches from time to time.

I am embarking on the two-watch journey myself. I have AW 6 and now an Ultra (1). Both of these watches still have the Blood/Oxygen ability, which I like. To be honest, I still really like the sleekness of the AW 6, plus I have the Spiedel twist-o-flex band which is awesomely comfortable. But, I need the ultra for the diving capabilities. I do really like the large face on the Ultra, but it’s such a beast I could not sleep with it comfortably.

My major issues so far are the annoying charging chime of the second watch on the charger and syncing up watch faces across focus modes.

Any tips in this regard would be much appreciated. Any other tips or issues you’ve run across with solutions would also be appreciated.

Sorry to bump an old post, but it does not make sense to start a new one on the same topic.

I never checked to see if these bands are available for the Apple Watch. My father had one on his (now) 60+ year-old watch that I still wear on special occasions.

I’ve got a friend who is a master leather worker and he made for me a strap that I can clip to my belt loop in order to wear a “real” watch alongside my Apple Watch.

I also have a TinyPod on my Christmas List this year.

Bumping an old comment, but do you remember any of the details of what you found annoying? I’ve been considering buying a newer watch and relegating my existing older model to workouts and sleep tracking (and retiring my Oura Ring, which I only use for sleep data), but I’m wondering if I’m making things more complicated instead of simpler.

I don’t have any issues switching between the 6 and 9, the watch app properly recognises which one O have on and switches.

Updates can be a pain, but I think I’m past that now and just manually doing it.

The thing that’s hit me since watchOS 11 is that the 6 can’t detect sleep apnea. I’m just doing without for now.

It may be my driver to get an AW Ultra 3 next September, and use the AW 9 for sleeping.

If I recall, it was just finicky enough on switching to the active watch that I didn’t find it worth it.

If you are considering a new watch, even a 10 with “lower” battery life as compared to the Ultra, I would just go with one watch. You can certainly find like 30ish minutes per day to put enough charge on the watch for what you’ll need. And if you know you have a long travel day coming up, just charge to 100% and be ready to put it in low power mode for those international trips or whatever.

I think what you gain by having two watches isn’t worth it especially with how fast the new watches can charge. I have a buddy who traded in his Ultra for the new 10 and loves it.

An Update on my two-watch saga… It has ended.

After this post I started to notice that I was getting weird reminders for things I had already checked off in my Reminders on my Macs (both Sequoia). The reminders were not syncing to either watch correctly. The AW 6 had one wrong set, the AW Ultra had another wrong set, but luckily My Macs (home and work), iPhone 14 and iCloud synced up just fine.

Time for Apple Support…

After literally days of troubleshooting with Apple Support for over 9 hours and them escalating it to personalized on-on-one support, I finally just wiped both watches and only synced the Ultra.

The process: Before wiping I turned off syncing on my iPad and iPhone and deleted all reminders on each. There ended up being a sticky (corrupted?) reminder that I had to manually delete even after un-syncing with iCloud on my iPhone 14. So, only the two Macs (iMac & MacBook Air) and iCloud had reminders on them. Also, I deleted all of my completed reminders older than 6 months (that was ~20,000 completed reminders) which really sped up the syncing. Finally, after the iPhone 14 synced up again and everything matched the Macs, I dared to turn on syncing on the Ultra and crossed my fingers. Viola… it all synced up and continues to sync. And I don’t get random reminders for things I’ve already done. Finally, after a few days, I turned on sync on the iPad and that synced up as well.

The AW 6 is still wiped and in my desk drawer. I’ve learned to live with the Ultra’s bulkiness for sleep and the Twist-O-Flex band looks really nice (and comfortable) with the Ultra.

So, to make a short story long, I’m once again a 1-watch guy. But I love the long battery life of the Ultra, it let’s me charge when convenient and I can dive with it.
