AppleID to reset Mac Password?

I was setting up my new Mac (M3 Max 64GB, 4TB) and Apple asked me if I want my AppleID to be allowed to reset my password. I realized, I don’t know how secure that is.

Thoughts?

I’m not commenting on this feature specifically (I haven’t looked into it deeply) but I tend to shy away from things like this: They twig the part of my brain that gets uncomfortable about potential unintended consequences like the iPhone theft and AppleID reset brouhaha from a few months ago.

On the other hand, availability is also a component of security and for most people this is probably an option that reduces overall risk.

I allow my MacBook Pro to be unlocked with my Apple user ID. This feature came in handy when i was restoring a friend’s MacBook to factory settings recently and his Admin password would not work. I was able to use his Apple ID and password instead.

In the bonus round I also noticed: “Allow my iCloud account to Unlock my Disk”. "Allow my iCloud account to unlock my disk" and "Allow Apple ID reset user password" | MacRumors Forums

What I wonder, under what circumstance will my account password not unlock my computer?

Your Apple ID password is not the same as an Administrator password.

Agreed. There is no risk I will ever forgot passwords. My Mac and 1Password Vault passwords are written down. There are even saved paper copies in a safe at a friends house.
