Back to the Mac? Federico changes apps and hardware like a chameleon changes colors 🤣

Posted with a good sense of humor and appreciation for Federico. I enjoy listening to Federico and appreciate his commentary. No disrespect intended. :slightly_smiling_face:

In the article:

  • Absent significant improvements in iPadOS 19, Federico will add a Mac to his setup.

But also

  • If Apple supports third-party plugins for Final Cut Pro for iPad, John will consider moving more of his video editing to the iPad.

Sounds almost like a deathmatch.

It’s his revenue stream. (KISS) Keep it Shuffling Stupid.
There has to be something in the news to justify the Mac Stories Subscription.

To be quite honest, I appreciate what Federico has been doing with regard to working off the iPad Pro alone. I had to work on the iPad Pro only for about two years for various reasons, and his experience, insight and tips have been invaluable!

I have been back working on the Mac and the iPad Pro for a while now again, and I get where he’s coming from, as productivity work on the iPad Pro remains severely limited and restricted due to software limitations and Apple’s decisions. I could work again on iPad Pro alone, but despite having the latest one, I don’t want to as it quickly becomes frustrating and limiting. Sadly, iPadOS seems to stagnate again for several releases (since the Stage Manager debut).

Dare I say “when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail?”

Based on what I’ve heard Apple executives say, and what I’ve read online, this seems to be intentional. Apple does not want and does intend for the iPad to be as capable and flexible as the Mac. Their intent is for the iPad to be a companion to the Mac, not a replacement. From a user perspective, that is unfortunate. My preference, like Federico’s, is to use the iPad exclusively as my primary computing device. Unfortunately, as I posted here, while I can use the iPad for many things, I was unable to make it my exclusive computing device.

I appreciate what Federico has done over the years. I found some value in his workflows when I had to make changes to my life due to moving, construction, etc.

But it’s been a few years and I still have difficulty with my workflows. Many times I want to pull out the iPad Pro and work, however despite all the restarts, it’s super slow in opening an app, hangs frequently for email, messages, etc. For the last few months I have been making more notes on my usage. I can do a few things on there but it’s hectic. Primarily, it’s just now Obsidian, Keynote, anything else can easily cause frustration.

On the Mac side, I do everything in my Mac Mini (the 2 monitors help out a lot). I have been noticing a trend to just do everything in my Mac (write, research, read, etc) and then have the iPad Pro and the iPad Mini as the final output device to present/display from.

I’ve considered a MacBook Pro again, every once in a while I will use my wife’s when I need to if there’s an emergency. But I feel foolish when I see something on the screen and try to swipe up and nothing happens.

What’s the best combination? Not sure. Because even if I got the MBP, my brain hasn’t thought of how to keep the Mac Mini and MBP in sync together. I try not to use iCloud too much for files and stuff. If I need to…just the 1-3 files that I need for that specific item.

What iPad are you using and what apps are slow? My iPad isn’t perfect but being slow isn’t something that comes to mind.

With regard to Federico. I do like his work, but he tends to use a lot of words to say not so much. The way he wants to use the iPad for specific workflows is very niche. I can do most of my work without problems or workarounds on the iPad. His comment on web apps also apply to many Mac apps, so I don’t get the point he wants to make.

I have the 12.9 iPad Pro (2018), the last A generation before it went to the M1.

Running any app takes time, from loading Messages, Safari, Obsidian, Fanastical…sometimes, I will get a just a white screen, wait…keep waiting, (sometimes it works other times I need to full exit and re-open again).

Storage isn’t an issue, its about 50-55% empty (after doing a clean-out of files and offline loading)

All I would want from Apple is for them to open the iPad to other browser engines and then the iPad could remain as is. My work forced me back to the mac because some web services I used demanded real Chrome.

Would I prefer WebKit and Safari be just as flexibile as Chrome and I never have to touch Chromium? Of Course. But that is not the world we live in. I am forced to use Google stuff and the Google Workspace apps are awful

Did you also do a clean install? That might help, but the device is of course also getting a bit old so things might get a bit slower.
