I contacted the developer about the high memory use, the explanation is as follows:
most of the 600MB it’s using is generally because Bartender has loaded all SF Symbols in for display/browsing in Bartender Settings (images/icons you can pick for groups, preset etc), macOS insists on caching the SF Symbols in app memory (no way around this or to manually clear it) macOS will automatically clear its cache as soon as the memory is needed. Also Bartender only loads these if you open preferences or the editor for groups, so if it’s day to day running they shouldn’t even all get cached to begin with
and
I have just released Bartender 5.0.27 which only loads the images when you click to choose a different one, it should prevent macOS filling its cache as often
Thanks. It’s better for me now. I was hovering around 650MB and it’s now 30 on open, and 150 after opening preferences and clicking through every pane.
I see the same result indeed. I know what the developer says about macOS clearing memory if needed is true, but I can’t help being a bit obsessive about memory usage, especially for small utility apps… probably a leftover from ‘the old days’
I understand. Plus, even though macOS does reclaim stale memory use, you wouldn’t want that sudden 600MB pressure on everything else you’re doing if you can avoid it when you open Bartender preferences.
I was banging my head against the desk trying to figure out the new Groups feature, as putting an item in a Group didn’t seem to make it disappear from the menu bar. It took me a while to figure out you have to make an item hidden, and then add it to a group.
Can anyone explain how to create Groups? I just got Bartender 5. It’s easy as pie to create Presets … which I’ll use most of the time. But groups? I’m not finding any documentation about how to create these. Help kindly appreciated.
tl;dr: MacUpdater gave a warning about updating to Bartender 5.0.52 because “The company and developer behind Bartender was replaced in a silent and dubious manner”.
Hey everyone, new owners of Bartender here! Our team acquired Bartender from Ben S, the original developer, two months ago. As we prepare to roll out updates for Bartender, we needed to re-sign the app with Apple using our company’s information, replacing Ben’s. This led to a one-time certificate change.
Truth be told, we should have notated it on the release notes but, since we could not update them retroactively, we included this fact on our blog & shared it with users as they emailed us. We’ve collaborated closely with Ben to understand his vision for Bartender. Our goal is to implement many of the improvements he had planned and address any reported bugs from the past few months to enhance Bartender’s performance.
