Bartender 5 is out

and most of us can’t use it yet!

It won’t work on anything less than Sonama and 4 isn’t optimised for it. (correction after misreading site)

I’ve upgraded already, such a useful bit of software I took the discounted lifetime option.

I’ve been using v4 on Sonoma since the initial developer beta. :grinning: I get Bartender through Setapp so it’s just the stock version of Bartender.

Where did you find that?

On the Purchase Bartender 5 page I see a “regular” Mega Supporter (lifetime) license ($40 + local taxes) and a discounted upgrade (€9,37 + local taxes), but no discounted lifetime license.

Also confused by the fact that some prices are in dollars and others in euros…

When I clicked through to upgrade it appeared alongside the single version upgrade.

You’ll have to enter your current license first. Then, as @aardy noted, you’ll see it when you click through.

Ah, yes, after filling in my serial key I could choose between 50% discount on the one-time upgrade or 25% on the lifetime upgrade.

My organization won’t allow me to install Sonoma for quite some time, so I can postpone my decision.

Oh, that Groups feature looks fantastic!

Comes with presets, nice!

I absolutely love Bartender. Groups and presets in v5 look amazing.

Although it appears like there might be a few features missing (image-based triggers is something I use quite a bit, and it looks like it might not be in v5 yet). It seems like it’s a complete rewrite of the app though, so it’s understandable not everything will be there from launch.

I only wish I didn’t have to provide screen recording permission to the app. :slightly_frowning_face: . I know it’s a macOS restriction but that makes me hesitant to use it on work devices.

The new features are actually pretty good, especially one can change the color of the menubar

It appears that the most recent (and probably last) Bartender 4 upgrade has only one new feature – if you run it on Sonoma it will say you need to upgrade to Bartender 5. Personally Bartender 4 seems to be running just fine on Sonoma, so I’ll avoid as best I can this upgrade until I actually want to move to Bartender 5. Then I’ll probably get the lifetime license.

For some reason when I got up this morning I found Sonoma installed on my main Mac. Not happy since I didn’t approve the install (at least I don’t think I did!). Only thing it seems to have broken is BBedit.

Do you use any rogue amoeba apps?

In what way did it break BBEdit for you? I have been running the beta and now rc for Sonoma but did not experience issues with BBEdit

No, but I’ve heard there are some problems. Normally I wait until the .1 release or even later to upgrade my “critical” system, but I was caught offguard with this upgrade. At least the beta is the release candidate!

It pops up a dialog informing me I needed to upgrade to BBedit 14, then it crashes, offering to send the crash report to Apple (after all, it is a Beta OS). Thankfully BBedit 14 is available, otherwise I’d be in big trouble. Here are the dialogs for both BBedit 13 and Bartender 4.2.21:

Ah, that explains why I did not have this issue. I’m already on Bbedit 14

It just seems weird to me that what is basically just a text editor won’t run after the move to Sonoma when everything else I’ve got, including what I would expect are system-invasive utilities, work fine.

I agree, I cannot imagine a thing in Bbedit that would have issues with Sonoma. The developer also does not give a clear reason why: https://www.barebones.com/support/new-os.html#140

This has been a terrible update so far. It feels so rushed.

Currently taking up 700mb RAM on my Laptop on the day I paid for Mega supporter. Geez

I also noticed this high memory use, but since the latest update its seems better now. I’m on 5.0.26… I have received a lot of updates in the last days… seems like the update was a bit rushed indeed, but I’m sure the developer will improve it.
