Do you archive imessages or do they just live in the app with you?
Now that they sync to iCloud (assuming you’ve switched it on), I don’t bother deleting unless a particular message is completely useless or the conversation hasn’t had activity for a very, very long time.
Exception: I do delete messages from automated accounts - 2-factor authentication codes, Amazon shipping notices, etc.

I would love a way to archve the SMS/iMessage inbox, so that I can use it fully in the GTD lifestyle.

I’ve used iMazing software for the Mac to archive certain important iMessage threads, both as PDFs with embedded images and as text only CSV files. I have personally found the software to be a bit wonky at times but for this use case it has been really helpful.
