Caldigit ts3 downstream and host thunderbolt explainer?

Been doing some looking around for a powered usb-c doc and considering the Caldigit TS3. Can someone explain what they mean by “host” and “downstream” when it comes to the Thunderbolt ports? I assume downstream is data from the computer but would love some clarification.
As for the whole thunderbolt, usb-c mess. Yikes.

Host would be the connection to your computer and downstream would be the connection to another Thunderbolt device.
