Canva acquires Affinity apps

Can you drag and drop headings in the navigable outline view in the side panel and have your reorganization of sections there automatically happen in the document itself?

If so, that’s very interesting as it contradicts the claims of the iA Writer dev that it’s difficult or impossible to do with Mac-native code. Of course, the folding headers already contradicts their stated reasons for not bringing that feature to the Mac app.

You’d have to tell me why I need a side panel. I collapse some or all of the headings and move them around in the document itself via drag and drop.

You probably don’t. It’s just a convenient way to view and (when needed) reorganize longer documents quickly.

It’s done!

Thank you!

It’s a lifetime with no strings attached. People who paid 5$ for a lifetime 7 years ago are still getting everything for free.

The lifetime price appears not to have changed on the Canadian App Store, or at least it’s not in line with iA’s pricing.

Would you mind changing it there as well? Thanks!

Hm. I’ve probably messed up the dates. Extended it now!

Everything is possible to do. Just look at Craft. It’s a fully native document editor with tons of fancy text features.

Some things are supported by the native widgets/components on macOS/iOS. Others you have to implement from scratch. iA Writer might not want to take on the burden of supporting a custom text editing component as they might already have enough on their plate with various versions for different OSes.

So the “difficult or impossible” might be correct in terms of Apple-provided components. But it is still possible to do with an expensive custom implementation.

First, thank you for being so responsive and forthright. Your willingness to make this available as a lifetime purchase is beyond commendable. I will put my money where my mouth is and purchase the app for all my devices. I will also purchase future upgrades if I find the app to be as valuable as I believe it will be. I have a question. I previously downloaded the trial version. How do I make the one-time purchase? The screenshot below is from the iPad. Do I also need to purchase the Mac app separately? If so, that is perfectly fine.

Second, I will remove my comment above about the price being ugly. I’ll leave my comment about the beauty of the app’s design, but I don’t want the comment about the ugly price showing up here or in future Google searches. That wouldn’t be fair to you.

Thank you!

Yes, you need to purchase separately for Mac and iOS.

The lifetime purchases are hidden by default.

On the Mac press the link in the top left corner of the popup at the bottom of the View menu to access the Lifetime purchase.

On iOS, while Paper is running, go to the Settings app and toggle Paper > Purchases > Show Lifetime Option. Alternatively you can also press the Lifetime In-App Purchase on Paper’s App Store page.

Thanks! I’ll give this a try and then confirm in a few moments.

Done; I purchased the app for my Mac and my iOS devices. Thank you for offering this option and for your kind responsiveness. I’m impressed and grateful. I look forward to using the app!

Also, I’m not sure why, but when I go to the App Store and search for Paper or Paper app, your app does not appear. I must go to purchased apps (because I downloaded the trial previously) to find it. This may be only my issue, but I thought I’d let you know so that you are aware of this issue if there is anything you can do to optimize the search in the app store.

Except to the possibility of a web based service unfortunately.

@mihhail Your willingness to listen to the MPU member community and lowering the price is commendable. For your kindness and willingness listening to the MPU community, I went ahead and purchased Lifetime on both the platforms. I have done the trial and I really liked the app.

I also see that you have a Smart Paste which I need to try it out sometime.

I did not expect doing so, but I just did the same.

Paper for sure is a beautiful piece of software and a pleasure to use!

By open, I think @mlevison meant transparent, though they’re certainly more open to adding new features and options compared to a lot of devs, even leaving aside the wide-open nature of community plugins and themes.

The appeal of local, future-proof plaintext files completely under the user’s control has always been central to Obsidian’s identity. I believe they’re concerned about a web app compromising that, and about diverting dev time and resources away from the desktop and mobile apps. They’ve found their core target market, and they don’t really need to compete directly with SaaS apps like Notion and ClickUp.

Personally, I’d much rather see them focus on implementing still missing features like editing transclusions in place.

As an aside, is there an option to choose whether the shortcuts for bold and italic use asterisks or underscores as markdown? I personally hate underscores, and there doesn’t seem to be a way to make cmd-i or the italic button in the mobile app use asterisks.

You can find a lot of additional settings in the Settings app under Paper, including Markdown ones.

I did not want to clutter the main interface with them.

Thanks, yes I meant transparent. I don’t think they always make the right decision. At least I can see why they make them.

Ah, thank you! That’s the first time I’ve seen that sort of setting outside the in-app settings.
