My “proof of concept”:
Gas meter > USB cable > Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W > HTTP > Homey > MQTT pub > Raspberry Pi 4B > MQTT sub > iPhone > Shortcuts > Canvases > widget 
Yes, more complicated than needed, but everything up to (and including) the MQTT broker on the 4B was already available anyway…
Deal breaker: hard to run more frequently than once per day using Shortcuts; the future API (that he mentioned on Mastodon) would be welcome!
