Capto-to buy or not to buy

Said with all due affection: Before I enter the Sparks Reality Distortion field  What is your experience with Capto? I downloaded Boom (same company) and then found I can’t use it with Apple Music. I do have occasional use for annotated screen casts (and my loom subscription will expire soon) and the price is right.

FWIW—the Sparks Reality Distortion Field saw me buy it over the weekend, after following his link, and then noticing the discount currently on offer.

I have NO idea whether I will actually end up using it more than CleanShotX — but the video “editing” part of it (and the reduced price), saw me take a chance. Will give it a proper go in the week.

I ended up not buying it. If you have used, how did you like it?

Wow this has just reminded me that Capto is indeed a thing. I used to use it for screenshots all the time and I think when CleanShot X came out, followed the new shiny and left it. However Capto was fine, never any issues with it and quality of output was good, so as it’s on Setapp I’ll check it out again.

Head-to-head I think Capto’s video editing and annotation is more feature-rich than CleanShotX.

This was the Google review: Capto is a Mac-based screen recording and image editing tool highly praised for its robust annotation features and video editing capabilities, making it ideal for tutorials

However, user reviews are polarized, with many reporting stability issues, crashes, and a “clunky” interface, while others find it a high-value, feature-rich tool

I’m trying to be more intentional about app purchases so I appreciate the dialogue here.

Just to add another option for consideration: Snagit. I used Snagit for many years, and was satisfied with the results, though it’s sort of old-school design-wise. It has now gone subscription. I don’t do much video work these days, so I’ve let Snagit go away.
