Carbon Copy Cloner 7 - Missing features?

I’m a long time user of CCC. And as backups are important, I try to keep this software up to date. That’s why I upgraded to CCC 7 when it was released.

However, I’m under the impression that this version is in certain aspects worse than the previous one. Most noticeably when it comes to notifications. With CCC 6 I got notifications when my backups were overdue and when backups started and finished after connection an external (usb) disk. These notifications all seems to have vanished with CCC 7.

Also, backups don’t start automatically anymore after connecting the external drive. I have to go into CCC and start the backup manually.

Has anyone else noticed this degraded functionality in CCC 7?

As Bombich support is quite limited (i.e. only through a form on their website), I thought I’d first ask around here.

I don’t use CCC. However, on their website in the support section, both of these features are available with instructions on how to setup in Ver 7.

I have in the past made support queries directly to Bombich Software. They got back quickly with full answers. I urge you to ask them and then report results here. likely to be the best advice.

I just upgraded to CCC 7 last week so I don’t have a ton of experience with it yet, but I haven’t seen the same issues. One of my backup tasks is set to launch when a particular volume is mounted and it has continued to do so every time this week. I also received the notification stating that the backup had completed and the stats about it. I don’t have much to offer in terms of troubleshooting, but wanted to share that these features are working for me as before. I wonder if there could be a permission required that you haven’t re-authorized after the upgrade? I had to grant some permissions again in System Settings after the upgrade.

I set up a new back up when a device connects in CCC7 and it has worked fine every time.
Also when I was away for a week I did get a pop up saying it was a while since I’d backed up.
So from my experience it seems fine.

I have been using CCC 7 since it was in beta, always backup as triggered by attaching an external SSD and (although I have never used the reminder feature) notifications have worked perfectly for me.

Incidentally, on the very rare occasions when I’ve needed support over the very many years I’ve used CCC responses have always been very quick and helpful.

Like others I use CCC 7 and both the notifications and automatic start on attaching a disk work fine for me. I didn’t have any issues when upgrading just did a normal upgrade from within the app. I’m running it on a Ventura system and on a Sonoma system

I have finally abandoned Time Machine.

For a year my MacBook Air has been able to run a Time Machine backup across my local network to an external spinning disk drive hosted by my old Mac mini. Previous to that, I used an Apple Time Capsule. But for several days recently the Time Machine process would no longer run.

So I bought a new spinning disk drive, plugged it into a spare Thunderbolt port on the back of my Apple LG 24-inch Ultrafine 4k display monitor, and set up Carbon Copy Cloner to run a backup every hour. Works great.

I’ll also continue to use CCC to run a daily backup to a rotating set of half a dozen disk drives that I keep in a fire safe. And overnight, Arq Premium will continue to back up the MacBook Air remotely.

Do you all have the CCC “Dashboard” menu bar item visible? I do have it start at login, but not visible. Perhaps that’s the cause of the missing notifications?

I know. But there is a difference between having the Dashboard load at login (which I have) and the Dashboard menu bar item being visible (which I don’t).

You could try activating the mini task progress window (the same page as already linked). I use that and everything—including notifications—works perfectly.

CCC is awesome! Have used it since v0.

Make it visible. It is in your menu bar for a reason. It is of little use if you cannot see it. Why on earth would you hide it? Especially if you see reduced functionality when you do?

Well, you certainly have a point to make it visible as a test to see if the missing functionality returns. Otherwise, I hide most of my menu bar items. Only those which add functionality are shown. Or those you can’t hide. With only 2 backups per week, CCC’s menu bar icon adds little to no value.
I’m a minimalist.

I’ll be interested in the results of your test.

Many have chimed in to say they weren’t experiencing “degraded functionality in CCC 7,” and none of them said they hide the CCC Dashboard in their menu bar.

Indeed, I chimed in before and I do have the item in my menu bar.
