I have a 2024 MY Mazda3 and an iPhone 11 (iOS 18.3.1). I can connect phone and car via Apple CarPlay and everything except the phone works fine (including Siri). When I try to use the phone via CarPlay all audio is via the phone and not the Mazda’s speakers. All other apps that play audio play through the Mazda’s speakers.
So I then tried my wife’s iPhone 14Plus connected to the Mazda’s CarPlay. All apps (including the phone) work correctly. All audio plays through the car’s speakers.
When I look at the Mazda3’s Owners Manual there is a page that lists the following:
The following models differ depending on the vehicle model and date of
manufacture.
Made for
iPhone 12 Pro Max
iPhone 12 Pro
iPhone 12
iPhone 12 mini
iPhone SE (2nd generation)
iPhone 11 Pro Max
iPhone 11 Pro iPhone 11
…
iPhone 5s
So I wonder if that means only iPhone 13 and later work correctly with Apple CarPlay in Mazdas. I should add that my previous car was a Subaru XV 2014 MY and my iPhone 11 worked perfectly with that car.
I don’t know the answer, but I’ve found over the years that a restart of the phone and/or disconnecting from the car then reconnecting fix some kinds of glitchiness. You might already have tried that, of course
When connected to the car with your phone, check the call screen on the phone itself while on a call. There should be a control for selecting which audio device the phone is using for the call. Make sure the car is selected, not the phone. Of course, you will want to do this when you are not driving.
This has happened to me before. For some reason I had selected the phone rather than a connected device for audio while on a call. Then for the next call with that same device, it remembered my previous selection and wouldn’t use the device until I changed it back. Fortunately, when a device is disconnected the phone will properly fall back to the phone for audio, but it doesn’t always work the other way.
