CD-DVD/BluRay External DVD Drive Recco

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good CD/DVD/BluRay External drive? Ideally a nice silver one similar to in looks to the Apple SuperDrive?

I currently have an Apple SuperDrive that is able to read/play CDs and ‘normal’ DVDs on my MacMini desktop, but would like to upgrade it to a newer drive that supports CDs, ‘normal’ DVDs, and BluRay DVDs.

I’m aware that Apple does not support/produce their SuperDrive any more and as far as I know, have no plans on releasing a modernized version that would support reading/playing BluRay’s

I have an LG WH16NS60 drive installed in an OWC Mercury Pro case. Works great backing up CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray Discs, and 4k UHD discs. I picked it up a while ago so there may be newer options.

I used this MakeMKV post for reference when making my decision.

I’m trying to understand what they flash there.

What’s special about that firmware?

(I’m a bad reader sometimes, so might have missed it, if it is mentioned there)

To me, all of this is written in German. :stuck_out_tongue:

I can’t tell if descriptions of the drives listed work on Mac, or if they support regular DVDs and CDs as well sure BluRay. Like Rob above, I too can be a bad reader of posts like this. LOL

They’re flashing the drive to enable you to remove DRM when attempting to rip Blu-rays.

You’ll also need to get VLC and some other software to be able to play Blu-ray Discs on your Mac.

Or you can buy a commercial Blu-ray player app.
