Changes for apps in the European Union

Today Apple is announcing new terms for the EU, which will go into effect on October 1 (2026):

I didn’t know this was (or will be) possible for mobile apps:

Web Distribution lets developers distribute notarized iOS and iPadOS apps directly to EU users from a website owned by the developer and registered with Apple.

Apple has been using Gatekeeper to do this on the Mac for 14 years. I doubt if it took much effort to do the same thing on iOS/iPadOS
