Our 2013 27" iMac died today…
It was a loaded system with a 3tb Fusion HD/SSD. I found it this afternoon with the dreaded “Prohibitory Symbol” on the screen. Attempted a First Aid fix that took all of 2 seconds. SSD was greyed out and HD shows up but not found for a reinstall. 12 years was a good run!
My wife asked if this was a repair or new computer time?
I told her either way and asked her what she wanted IF we bought new. She loves the big screen but needs an updated OS. Doesn’t think a MBA or MBP makes sense she dislikes trackpad/keyboard layout. Suggested clamshell mode with her current keyboard and mouse - declined. So an iMac or Mac mini with one of my spare monitors it is. She brings up that Tennessee is having their Tax Free Back to School weekend starting tomorrow. Could we find something to get her up and running on Saturday? I told her we probably could.
Then she dropped one of the biggest reasons I love her on me… “What if I take your Mac mini (M2/16gb/256) and YOU get a new Mac?”
Pretty sure she was paying attention when I watched the video of the guy who upgraded an M4 Mac mini SSD the other day. Only catch is I have to recycle the old iMac along with a few others.
My question for the Forum is since I can replace the SSD for under $300US for 2tb, is there any real advantage to upgrading the RAM from 16 to 24? I do not perform any real “heavy lifting” anymore on my computer.
