The feature set is similar. I was a minimalist for many years (macOS screenshot tools are pretty decent), but last year I decided to invest in Cleanshot X and it is really fantastic.
Too many of these snapshot tools. I should probably just use the built-in one which has improved over the years. However I seem to always use Skitch which was (is?) part of Evernote. I used Skitch before Evernote bought it. I’ve tried to get into Shottr for its scrolling capture and OCR. (as well as a low $8 one time price or free with annoyances).
I am an absolute master of all things screenshots. I have licenses to or have used about ~30 solutions on windows and about ~20 on Mac.
SnagIt 2024 is the king. Make sure to buy a license now before they retire 2024’s license and go full sub (it’s been announced).
Here’s the answer to your question @nealf. SnagIt 2024 on Mac Mini M2 Pro (16GB / 512GB) is stupid slow when taking screenshots. CleanShotX is far superior in this regard.
That said, if you love annotating your screenshots, SnagIt is the undisputed king. Nothing else comes close. Nothing. Nada. Anyone who tells you otherwise doesn’t know what they’re talking about.
IMO, SnagIt is worth the one-license price, but not a subscription (ugh). I use CleanShotX for quick screenshots and SnagIt when I plan to annotate.
I have been using both CleanShot X and SnagIt. I like SnagIt very much and has been the most used. It can be a bit slow at times, but nothing noticeable that it annoys. The best feature is the Recent Capture Strip at the bottom. I have the need to go back to recently captured images frequently and having it visible and scrollable is great from within the app. Switching to library is also a click away. Also the auto scrolling capture for full pages is better implemented in SnagIt. I missed these features in CleanShot X. Though its great in what it does. You cannot go wrong with either of them. Its the minute details that you need specifically drives you towards one of them.
