Cloud storage - is google drive any good these days?

Hi everyone, and happy new year! Microsoft have put the price of my one drive subscription (which also includes word, powerpoint etc) up by 50%. It was always very cheap, so it’s still probably good value.

But it’s made me look at google.

I used to use it but it always felt clunky on the Mac.
Time has passed.
I’m wondering if it’s any good these days?

I use it regularly, and have no issues.

To be fair, I have the app installed only to make sure things are backed up to my computer, and I typically interact with Drive only in the browser.

That said, I’ve got three different accounts set up, and not a hitch with any of them.

I agree with @acavender. I been a Gmail user since the beta and have had two personal domains on Google for 16 years.

I use most of the Google Workspace package with my iPad, iPhone, and Mac and don’t recall ever having a problem. Most files uploaded to Drive are searchable, even PDFs that have not been OCR’d.

It’s pretty good. Its my primary cloud provider. Sync works great on my mac and iPhone. Not noticed the macapp taking up much resources either (which it used to 3-4 yrs ago).

In addition to cloud storage, you also get other benefits including Gemini advanced model, which can save some money if you use LLMs

I use it and for file sharing with family, works. No complaints. Price right. Few apps are “integrated”. Google apps are integrated, of course. If you use Scrivener to write, take note of L&L’s warning about how Google Drive interferes with the files resulting in corruption.

I also have OneDrive running only because I have an Office 365 license (which I need for the time being). I don’t use it for anything, really, so cannot compare. I rely on Dropbox for Scrivener and DEVONthink, and their newish “backup” service (not sync).

Yep, I use our work google account everyday.

I like to use it with Hightop, easier to navigate than the web UI for me.

I work at a school. File management has been an issue with me cause it is very easy for things top get buried and search is ironically not as good as Apple Search light.

You might be able to stave off the price increase, if it’s this situation.

Thank you @cornchip! Wow! That’s a nasty way to make a load more money and destroy trust at the same time. Bad bad Microsoft.

Interestingly, and perhaps coincidentally, Outlook on my iPad just started showing me adverts, even though I (currently) pay for 365. They wasted 30 minutes of my life as I figured out that I needed to create an outlook.com email address under my Microsoft account and sign in with that on outlook.

Something’s changed inside the org …

Thanks everyone who replied. It’s so easy for me to switch between cloud providers, now the internet is so quick, that I’m thinking I will bump up my google accounts storage limit for a while and see how it goes. It sounds like it should be a smooth enough move.

Do you know if Hightop allows you to access your Google Shared Drives? (not shared with me, but files in the Shared Drive area of the google workspace).

I get confused by the shared drive terminology of google drive, but yes, I can see and access both My Drive and Shared Drives as well as Shared With Me, which is a black hole of everything I’ve ever done on google drive apparently and I avoid like the plague.

Interesting. I have just cancelled the family subscription and had none of that shenanigans. Still £79 per annum. I wonder if NZ was a test bed for this type of pricing or if it is happening elsewhere. I thought Microsoft had moved beyond that type of activity.

@dustying thank you for the tip on hightop
