I prefer to dictate a draft of my text and edit after.
I see Whisper Memos as a new promoted app and wonder if anyone has thoughts about how it compares to Drafts dictation function or JustPressRecord.
I am most interested in accuracy, but wonder also about security. I prefer that my dictation stay on device, but realize that may not be practical if the app does the work on its servers.
Input and thoughts appreciated.
Many thanks,
zowner
I’m using MacWhisper rather than the iPhone based WhisperMemo but since the back end is the same I presume some similarity. Pro — certainly very impressive accuracy, an order of magnitude better than the built in iOS and macOS voice to text, Dragon, etc. Slight Cons — it’s quite slow (conversion of a large file can take a minute or two), it’s asynchronous process (you bulk convert an audio file once you’ve finished recording which can take a bit of getting used to, you have to get in the flow of talking without worrying about how well it will convert) and at least in my experience the handling of punctuation is weird for someone used to explicitly putting punctuation in . You have to trust it to handle the punctuation: if you say “period”, “open quote” or “paragraph” these are transcribed literally. They are marketed as apps for transcribing (natural) speech rather than “dictation apps” and this is where that shows. I’m sure I’ll get used to it!
There are now quite a few of these iOS transcription apps on the App Store. I have tried some, and the areas where they differ are the overall usability and integration with the iOS system, whether they process transcription locally, or on the cloud, which model of Whisper they use, and if they allow any post processing using AI. Some save recordings and others just process them. Not all do a great job with long recordings.
