Looking to nab a stylus for my iPad A16, and it looks like my most budget-friendly options are the Crayon and the USB-C Pencil.
From what I can see, these are basically the exact same device in terms of functionality. Other than the form factor, is there some difference I’m missing? If not I’m going to go with the Crayon since it has a defined power button.
I’ve gone even more budget: I’ve just bought my second Metapen, which was less than $20 (Australian) on Amazon. (I bought the A8 model as it was the only one available at the time.)
For my use (taking handwritten notes in Apple Notes and on PDFs), I can’t tell any difference in functionality between it and when I used a Gen 1 Apple Pencil with an older iPad.
Because I love their “real” pens, I have been using a Lamy pen.
The buttons don’t work in my note taking app of choice (Noteful) but writing is no different than an Apple Pencil. I haven’t missed the magnetic charging yet - time will tell.
Wife bought it for my birthday back in February. I like it - wouldn’t use it for drawing or sketching, just because it doesn’t feel right for that. For whatever reason, you can’t have another pencil connected to the iPad at all (they recommend you delete all other pencils from the BT connection list) - this initially caused a problem until I did some digging.
I’ve used the Safari fountain pen for a number of years, it didn’t take to long to adapt to writing with this one. Writing is still equally a spider scrawl!
Tip seems fine - no screen protector or anything on the iPad and it works well.
I got a Metapen for my daughter to use with her iPad after she had unbearable envy that her dad has a real Apple Pencil and didn’t want to buy her one since she’s seven years old (sorry hon!). Before that, she had my old orange Logi Crayon which she happily used for a few months (but she got fixated on a cool case and storing the pen inside it, which is impossible with the Crayon because of the clunky size). The Metapen is surprisingly good – I had expected the woes of budget styluses from a few years back, that we basically useless, but frankly the Meta is just very good for the price.
The Lamy does look very, very nice too. I might consider that if ever my Apple Pencil breaks.
