Default Folder X version 6

New version! This is the only version which will work with macOS Sonoma. Shame that V5 will not work. There is an upgrade plan $9.99 or $19.99.

Thanks for the heads up. Seems like some great new features so this was an instant-upgrade purchase for me.

Is the quick search function basically the same as a Raycast or Alfred use case? But more specific to file management?

So, Bartender 4 and Default Folder X 5 do not work with Sonoma. What is it about Sonoma that breaks older app? It’s going to be a costly upgrade. I think I’ll stick to Ventura for now.

and BBEdit 14.0 I believe.
Certainly something is having an impact in the new version.

Yes it’s similar to Alfred, except it only searches for files/folders that are in a Default Folder X saved folder, and more importantly, it also works in open/save dialogs.

I use Default Folder X mostly for its ability to visually add onto the open/save dialog boxes. I am constantly accessing the ā€œRecent Foldersā€ and ā€œFinder Windowsā€ menus there. I think this is because I’m more visually-focused and I’m always working on multiple projects or dealing with different clients throughout the day.

I assume that SetApp will be offering both new versions of Bartender and Default Folder soon.

I’m assuming that, too – and this is the final push I’ve needed to subscribe to Setapp

I’m now waiting (hopefully not foolishly!) to see if they have any Black Friday discounts on subscriptions…

I have been able to save money on my subscriptions a few times over the years by buying a year’s worth of Setapp when it was on sale and crediting it to my account.

It’s similar, but focused just on files and folders. It searches your Default Folder X favorites and history - which means it will find recently used files, folders and applications, plus your favorite folders. From there, you can further navigate into folders to get to their contents.

My goal was to provide a limited search space that contains the items you’re more likely to want to access. I’m often frustrated by Spotlight, LaunchBar and other ā€œbroadā€ search utilities because I have to wade through a ton of results. This provides much more focused searching, though as a result, it won’t always have what you want (though depending oh how you work it may be 95% or better). That’s why there’s a ā€œSpotlightā€ item at the bottom - so you can hop to Spotlight if you don’t get what you want.

This is the first public release of the feature, so I’m open to input on making it more focused and useful for people. But I will still keep it focused on files and folders - I’m not gonna integrate ChatGPT :slightly_smiling_face:

Well, if you do go to Setapp to get Default Folder X (and yes, version 6 is now live on Setapp), can you use this affiliate link to sign up? It earns me an additional cut at no cost to you:

Welcome to the forum!
I find that Default Folder X v5’s 20 recent folders are not enough for my daily use. Often, I end up having to use a combination of Favorites and Recent.
Does V6 ā€œsearchā€ functionality have such limitation i.e. limited to the 20 recent folders or 20 recent files?

In v6 is see 100 as the limit for both recent files and folders. So I would assume that’s the limit for the ā€œsearchā€ of recent tiles and folders.

Thanks, Jon - will do :+1:

You can change the limit on the number of recently used folders. There’s a setting for it in Default Folder X > Settings > Recent.

And no, Quick Search isn’t limited to 20 items. It searches your full history, which is currently set to 200 folders and Finder windows, and 1000 recent files and applications.

I feel embarrassed for not noticing the Recent dropdown in Settings. What a ā€œdoh!ā€ moment. Thank you!

It’s been almost a year since V6 was released. Did you all find DFX to continue to be useful to you? I recently started to make full use of it’s Drawer feature, which is a bar at the bottom of finder where I can stickied certain files and folder so they are always available at my fingertips, specifically during Open/Save Dialogue Box. I am also starting to appreciate it’s Search feature to locate files and so I have configured it as ⌘ ⌄ Space (*), as an alternative to Alfred which, will forever be ⌘ Space to me. What other useful tips, shortcuts do you have?

(*) I’d love to be able to press ⌘⌄ Space again to close the search dialog box, just like how Spotlight and Alfred behaves @stclairsoft

How do you find DF search different than Alfred ? DF is one of those apps that I know I am not reaching the full potential.
