Delete Apple Maps?

Is there a way to delete Maps.app from a Mac? When the app is selected, the trashcan is greyed out making deletion impossible. Maybe just hide it – is that possible?

It contains several glaring location name mistakes, and I’d rather just get rid of it.

You can’t delete it, it’s part of the sealed system volume. I created a folder in the Applications folder named “Obsolete” which is where I put stuff like this.

Ugh. There is no way to delete or disable Mail, Music, Books, Notes, Podcasts, Maps, News, and Stocks. No matter how rigorous I try to be setting my default apps to be something other than Mail, Music, Books, Notes, Podcasts, Maps, News, and Stocks, they insist on opening themselves with annoying regularity. Music always seems to find a way to intrude itself when I’m trying to work with audio files.

So…given that you can’t remove the apps, there’s a project called “NoTunes” on GitHub (GitHub - tombonez/noTunes: A simple macOS application that will prevent iTunes or Apple Music from launching. · GitHub) that basically runs on your Mac, and monitors for when Music is launched. When it detects it, it kills the process. And I believe it can be configured to launch a different process.

This doesn’t solve your issue with Maps, but it might be easy enough to mod the code - especially with the help of AI - to do the exact same thing for Maps instead of Music.

Out of curiosity, what are you looking to replace it with?

I understand your dislike of the application, but I’m not understanding why you feel the need to delete it?

I don’t think I’ve launched the Chess application in over a decade and have zero interest in doing so, but I never felt the need to delete it. I just… don’t open it.

I’m trying to use Mapquest as much as I can. I like MQ better in car play than looking at it on my phone, for some reason.
