I am thinking about replacing three (or more) remote controls for TV, soundbar, and others with a “universal” remote. I am struck that one option appears not to exist. A hub that takes input from an iPhone over WiFi, converts the commands, and sends out the requisite IR signals for the respective device(s).
Does my wish exist? An iOS app + a hardware hub?
Note, I am disenchanted with considering the SofaBar products based on some comments that I read. I also want a system that supports easy set up of macros (e.g. turn on TV + turn on soundbar + turn on Roku … pause 10 s … switch to NetFlix … pause 3 s … login as user XYZ) even if only for a few steps (e.g. turn on: TV + soundbar + Roku). Finally, not all devices that should be controlled are on WiFi or ethernet, but all can be controlled by IR.
As a smart home integrator, I want to caution you that the holy grail of a universal remote that works reliability and without fuss and constant TLC, is unobtainium.
Whether a $30 IR adapter or a $3000 custom luxury system, they are all often the source of the highest consumer and installer frustration.
A crucial limitation is that IR is a one-way, best-effort comms protocol so achieving error-free and reliable remote control with IR is not possible.
OTOH, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and other remote control protocols are either too slow, or too limited that they cannot do the complete job.
Not saying you can’t get close and tweak things to the verge of being nice, but it is not a one-and-done easy project.
Many look back fondly on the now-discontinued Logitech Harmony, but their rose-colored glasses ignore the tons of bugs and problems the Harmony had and still has - I know, I’ve fought a lot of them keeping these things working for some clients.
I suggest getting an Aqara or other IR adapter and playing around with it and see if you can make headway before investing too much time or $$$.
Just to follow up here for those also interested. It seems that I have plenty to digest, especially to avoid being enticed by the glamor of solving problems that do not exist. I appreciate the suggestions for the Smartbot and Aqara product lines.
In the meantime, my search is on hold as other household projects have become higher priority.
