Download Podcast Files Locally? RSS Feed or Other?

I have a desire to archive some podcasts I listen to for posterity. Overcast is a great app for regular daily podcast usage but Marco has made it so you cannot export any of the downloaded audio files.

Apple Podcasts no longer stores the audio files in an accessible way. I did get some app that’s lets you find the files on your computer but it’s a massive hassle.

I’m thinking maybe RSS would work but I haven’t used that in a decade. I was going to try Reeder 5, but it’s $10 and is 4 years old, and I’ve been bit too many times by buying Mac App Store apps that were updated a month after I bought them, with no upgrade pricing.

Some podcasts I listen to are on Podbean and I can right click and download from there but I have to do it one at a time. I’d love something automated.

Any advice everyone? Much appreciated!

If you are using the Apple Podcasts app, on your Mac, your podcasts are in your user Library under Group Containers/ 243LU875E5.groups.com.apple.podcasts/Library/ Cache

Take a look at audiobookshelf. https://www.audiobookshelf.org/

It is FOSS which is a book server (with an app in TestFlight for iOS, but others such as plappa out which support CarPlay, and prologue dev actively working on audiobookshelf support). And while it does audiobooks (and ebooks too), it also has option to download podcasts and then they are downloaded on your machine. I use this for podcasts that only keep an rss with the last 20 or so podcasts so this lets me keep them all.

I’m sure there are easier options, but you actually can do this in Overcast - via the share sheet when you are on the screen for the individual episode.

NetNewsWire is a free and straightforward app that is pure and simple RSS. I’m sure it won’t automatically download every file, but I’d wager it’d be pretty simple to save them from there.

@GlitterPony I do this method all the time, in fact I have this folder saved to my Sidebar for easier access. Episodes that I want to keep, I just drag and drop out of this folder to my NAS. I run the files through Meta double-check the ID3 tags in there and that’s it! Been doing this for almost 9 years now.

Maybe this?

(Have not tried this myself)

The Downcast app on my iPhone lets me put a lock on an individual episode to keep it around.

I use Podcast Archiver for a few shows.
